OnStar Remote Link App

When I bought my car my saleman told me that if I setup OnStar I will be able to use the Remote Link App for 5 years even if I decided not to pay for OnStar service but after 6 months the app no longer works. A coworker bought a new silverado about 2 weeks before I bought my SS and his app still functions even though he didnt pay for OnStar. Not all the functions continue to work unless you pay but the remote lock/unlock/start functions still work which could be useful. Anyone else use this app?

I use it all the time on all our GM vehicles, but then I pay for OnStar.

I think the 5 year free remote keyfob started for 2014+, could be wrong though. What year is his silverado?

The 5 years of OnStar App is good on ALL 2014+ GM models.

i use it all the time, but i also pay for onstar.
seems to me, if you want to reap any benefits from a service, no matter what it is, you should pay for it.
i pay for it, so there fore get the service. if you dont, they you do without.

kevinw, I was not trying to get anything without paying for it! I was simply asking a question about it since I was told the app would continue to work even if i didn't pay for onstar. I got my answer that it applies to 2014's and up.

But what about the salesman that told you that? Have you asked him about it? Maybe you can get something out of the dealership especially if he told you that it should still work, and someone can verify it was said...

I could ask the salesman but I don't have anything that proves he said it. He was probably used to selling 2014's and forgot it didn't apply to 2013's since mine was the last 13 they had. Not a big deal really!

yeah, when I bought my 2010 Avalanche the salesman told me the app worked, found out that it only worked for 2011 forward..

8 months later several 2010 models were added and it did start to work, but from the onset it was never supposed too.

I saw someone posted an internal GM memo on the Avalanche forums one day that due to the large amount of complaints from 2010 owners that had been told the app would work for them, support for several 2010 models after certain build dates was being added..

I just bought my 2014 SS this week and the salesman opened the onstar site and showed me this. I copied straight off the onstar site.

"An active OnStar Directions & Connections or Safe & Sound service plan is required to access most RemoteLink features. However with 2014 OnStar equipped vehicles, when you download and use RemoteLink just once during your OnStar trial or consecutive subscription, you'll unlock access to the RemoteLink Key Fob Services, including Remote Start, Remote Door Lock and Remote Horn and Lights, for five years from date of vehicle delivery."
