ZL1 Rear end noise

I have a 2012 ZL1. The rear end makes this weird humming noise, similar to the sound when your power steering is low, coming from the rear when the wheels are cranked in either reverse or forward. Any help would be great!!!

I had the same issue. I found the TSB that relates to the issue that the SS has and the dealership honored the work. They replaced the fluid in the rear diff and also changed out the seals (per the TSB).

Since then, I haven't had the sound reappear. I think GM should look at extending the TSB to officially support the ZL1 as well.

theres a private bulletin for the zl1's. Calls to flush the fluid about 3 times and in between those drive it so many miles doing so many figure 8's and a lot of nonsense, all in all majority of the time they are replacing the whole rear end, and when you get it supose to take apart the cover and brake clean inside to get the paint off. The paint they used inside on the gear in the differential to set it, isn't breaking down like its supose to contaminating the lsd.

Just change the fluid, it will go away! takes 20 mins to do. you have to get the diff fluid with ls additive already in it.

May not be related to the fluid issue. Could be improper lash setup in the rear. Changing fluid will not help this problem.

When changing the fluid, how do you flush the old fluid out of the lines and cooler going up to the front?

I just drained at the diff, and filled at the upper plug, noise stopped. If you feel draining at the diff is not good enough and want to get the lines and cooler drained, take it to the dealer. Im sure they use some sort of positive feed pump, but i dont think thats needed.

Draining the lines and cooler would have no effect on the noise. The cooler is running transmission fluid and doesn't mix with the rear diff fluid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there is a feed and return line going from the diff to the front of the car and ran thru a heat exchanger, than there will be old gear fluid in those lines and hx unless flushed.
