What you need more than anything else is the eclipse effect of a dark shape over the light source center. The afterburner effect is like a solar eclipse. A black round or tail light lens shape in front of the bulb would probably be pretty close to the concept car effect. It's indirect lighting showing around the dark center. Whether that would be legal or not is another issue. It might not be bright enough.

Or the other more important issue is it might be so good looking that drivers would be distracted by looking at the "cool effect" and slam into the back of you (or somebody in the lane next to you) because they forgot they were looking at brake lights instead of special effects. I'd be more concerned over that actually than anything else.

ask

anyone know anyone at GM that could give us some insight as to how this was done. The Doc has pointed out how it can be done but just to speed up the process it would help if we could get some tips. I also agree these will deff has to be legal, no dimness! I want them to blind people behind like a BMW/ Benz

Hear is a tail light opened up to show the 3 parts.
#1 the red lens.
#2 the inner light Diffuser.
#3 the shell.

And you will see a LED strip that will do a good job for the light, I need to get some plastic to mount the leds on l And i was thinking to make the blacked out pat the brake/blinker light.

What do you think.

I think the blacked out part being the blinker would be interesting. Not sure if I like it or don't like it without actually seeing it, but it's definitely worth a shot!

I think your headed in the right direction. My only concern is the directional nature of those surface mount leds. If the leds were pointing towards the back of the car you'd have it all. Super high brightness Luxeon leds may do the trick. They are really small, but ridiculously bright. Some of these around the inside perimeter facing back, and then using a blocking plate of some kind like you said may work really well. This link has a red-orange luxeon that may give the "afterburn" look we all seem to like. Damn I wish I had my 2SS!
