Question about out of state buying.

Hey all. I should be taking delievery (yay) here in the next couple of weeks. However, due to the nature of my profession, I'm buying it out of state. I see here that people do that all the time, but since I've never done it before, I'm kinda curious as to what happens between walking on the lott, then walking off with the new car.

As far as license plates go, how does that work? Obviously the car can be registered in a state in which is was not bought in...how? I assume I will get a temp tag for X number of days. Will my home state just mail me plates? Is it really just that simple? Can registration be done online (I doubt it) and I won't be driving back to my home state for at least a year, so driving it back isn't an option.

Please advise.

CJ

To get plates in South Dakota you need a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin and your purchase documents. The purchase docs are so they know how much tax to charge you. The MSO has vehicle weight and vin and other info that they need. It takes 20 minutes to get metal plates with those two docs. If you want vanity plates, they give you a paper plate at the coutrhouse and mail you the metal ones in a few weeks - after the prisoners make it.

I bought mine in kentucky.I live in Wv. Its easy if you just transfer tags. You will get a temp tag and transfer later after the dealer sends the info to your DMV. you may also want to defer YOUR state taxes to be paid out of pocket instead of adding it to the total loan. Its really not an issue. Just make sure the dealer knows what they are doing.
