Pros/Cons Installing a cam advanced instead of straight up?

Trying to decide if I want to get a cam with 2 or 4 degrees timing advance vs one straight up. Advancing adds more low end torque correct? Do you lose top end?

Actually get a cam with a "straight up" and then you can install it any degree advanced or retarded. What you are basicly doing by retarded or advancing the cam is moving the power band up or down a few hundred RPM's. Example: lets say the power band on the cam is from 2500 to 6000 RPM's, if you retard the cam 4 degrees you will bring the curve down to from 2000 to 5500 RPM's and if you advance it 4 degrees you move it up to 3000 to 6500 RPM's. This is only a "for instance" but gives you and idea as to how it works in easy terms.

So if I buy a cam that already has the rpm range I want, I should leave it alone and install it at Zero.

Degree in every Cam install, Don't assume Anything.

Most do not need to be moved but some do as much as 4 degrees.

Ted.

First things first...unless you are spec'ing out the cam yourself you need to talk to the shop that you are buying it from. Many shops, like ourselves, will have you install the cam straight up as we have already done the advance for you ground into the cam.

Moving the cam from that position can possibly damage power as well as the engine.

I think you mean the opposite of what you stated above.

Advancing the cam will help low end, retarding the cam will help the high end.
If the cam has to move more than 4 degrees to get max HP/TQ it's the wrong cam for the application. If you end up moving the cam, be sure to check the piston to valve clearance or you may regret not doing so, it's good practice to always check PV with any cam change. Many cams sold today on the internet have a relatively tight LSA, the tighter LSA 108-114 will hurt idle and performance can suffer on a relatively heavy Gen5 with rectangular port LS3 heads. The tighter or numerically lower LSA will have a narrower the torque band, that would be ok on a lighter vehicle but the heavier vehicles need a wider torque band for street and strip.

I agree, we do the same with our cams.
