It would consume more fuel due to more cylinders/more displacement, but then you have to factor in vehicle weight, CD (Coefficient of Drag), rolling resistance of the tires, etc. However, depending on how big the difference is in all those variables between the V6/V8 or the smaller/larger displacement (even using the same # of cylinders), you might get a return based on the bigger engine having more power and thus having to not work as hard to pull the weight around. Just my personal take on it.

Well, it could also conjure up '67-'69 DZ302 Z/28 engines which were 5.0L!

If you want to get completely technical with it, 5L = 305.11 cid, using that 1L = 61.022 cid, 4.9L = 299.0078 cid, 302.4 cid divided by 61.022 cid gives you 4.9555897 L, so round up or down?

That was what the DZ302 did best, built for racing. Those GM boys were sneaky back then. How about a Corporate order special car with a 427, could call it...Oh, I dunno, anybody have a good name for it? ZL2 hood, dog dish hubcaps, no badging, hmmmm.
Might better just build a few tho, in case it doesn't sell well, 69 cars would be a nice round number.

Exactly right, my Sierra Z-71 4x4 ( 5.3 V-8 ) gets better gas mileage (22 mpg on flat highway) than my S-10 ZR2 4x4 ( 4.3 V6 ) which will never get 20 mpg on the highway, of course the 5.3 is a lot newer technology, but the truck is A LOT bigger, wider, taller, heavier.

I think some of the Mustang owners I smoked back then would disagree with your analysis!

I knew someone was gonna get that, your name fits you.
Lingenfelter probably already has the motors ready just waiting for the cars to put em in. That convert hood is just screaming "GIMME SOME COWL AIR!" Could use the 4 cyl cars grill, rear pan, hubcaps on lightweight superwide wheels, no stripes... Jay Leno would buy one, too rich for my blood honestly, BUT I will take a 1LE vert. "Racecar? No honey, that rollbar is just for structural integrity."

oh ya, i can see it now..hugger orange body...with hugger oange in the wheels surrounding the rimgs...would be kick @ss! however i liked the grill on the concepts..egg crate styling hmm wonder if they would put that on the higher end models..IMHO i think it brings out the car alot...hmm but yes most definitly both of the hoods vert and coupe scream for cowl air
