L99 A6 (D or M -always starts you out in 1st gear)

Over the past 10 - 11 months there's been a lot of confusion about the L99 A6 starting you out in 2nd gear. The L99 A6 DOES NOT start you out in 2nd gear when using D (drive) or M (Sport).

The ONLY time the L99 A6 starts you out in 2nd gear is when you are using the tap shifts (manual mode). If you are using the tap shifts you MUST tap down to 1st gear. If you don't tap down to 1st gear (in tap shift/manual mode), you'll start out in 2nd.

In D (Drive) or M (Sport) = both modes the computer does all the shifting. In these modes you will ALWAYS start out in 1st gear.
Test to prove it.
While in D or M (Sport) If you mash the gas from a dead stop, the computer will shift the car around
5800 rpms in 1st gear around 37 mph.
If you were starting in 2nd gear, the computer wouldn't make the shift until around
64 mph (redline in 2nd).

I hope this clears up the confusing.

There is a lot of confusion and I beg to differ. I believe you got it backwards, you will start out in 2nd UNLESS you use tap shift. Or if you have a V6. If in doubt check your owners manual or better yet TRY IT.

All you have to do is go drive your car. If you go from a dead stop (mash the gas) in D (drive) your car will shift from 1st to 2nd gear at 37mph.

Go try it. I gaurantee it will shift from 1st - 2nd gear around 37mph. That is because it's in 1st gear and 1st gear will redline around 37mph.

If you were in 2nd gear you would have to be going 60mph to reach 5800 rpms.

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

The quote you keep reading or thinking about from the owners manual is talking about MANUAL MODE. Manual mode is when you are using the tap shifts.

Go check your OWNERS MANUAL (8-29) - Manual Mode/tap shift. The owners manual is talking about when you're in Manual/Tap shift mode. That is the ONLY mode that starts you out in 2nd gear.

I've been racing my L99 for 10 months. D starts you out in 1st gear everytime.
