Service department taking my car for a joyride?

I dropped off my car at the service department for about 2 days. The problems were:

1) TSB PIO137C-2 (Rear axle chatter. Replace both rear axle shaft seals, drain/refill the differential with new fluid, GM P/N 88862624)
2) Gear shifter rattling noise (they replaced the shifter last time I was in. this time they tightened it up a little bit more to get rid of the rattling noise)

The mileage in/out on the official report was 11238/11238 (zero miles?). When I turned on the car, there were 23 extra miles! The radio was off, but when I turned it on, it was tuned to some random reggae XM channel that I did not have programmed. Also, the average MPG dropped from 19 mpg to 15 mpg.

I was at the dealer for over 2 hours trying to deal with rental car issues so I did not have time to complain the extra mileage when I saw it. I just wanted to get back to work!

Because the extra mileage was conveniently not reported, the average MPG went down by 4, and the radio was tuned to some reggae station makes me inclined to think someone took a joyride in my car.

Is testing the car for 23 miles normal for draining and refilling the differential fluid?

23 miles, someone should be in trouble. 5-8 could be normal. Not FRACKING 23.

You will have a hard time proving it now, but I agree. Someone took it for a ride.

Thats why when I take mine in to have the remote start put in along with some other stuff done, I am going to take a photo of my odometer with my cell phone, just in case, because this one place had a ZL1 that just came in and took it out and got it up 156 MPH.

I should have went back inside after I saw the extra mileage. Will definitely have a hard time proving it now, but I should still complain to the dealer and perhaps corporate! Where is that Chevy Customer Service guy on the forums here when you need him?

That's ridiculous! It's hard to find a dealer that you can trust. The fact that some mechanic is out enjoying and abusing my car without my permission or knowledge makes me reluctant to take my car in for service.

I also took a picture of the odometer, but did not take one after I got my car back with the extra mileage. Lesson learned!

2 days..I am sure they had to take the car out for a test drive before they performed the work to know what they are dealing with and highly likely test drove it again maybe a couple more times after the work was done to make sure they got it done right and the noises are gone. Just think, if they took it on the freeway and drove it out for a 3-5 miles, then had to drive back, that's 6-10 miles round-trip just on the first trip. Just saying..

It's definitely possible.

The only thing is I took the car in 2 weeks ago and they had to order the parts for problem #1. This visit they were suppose to just install the parts, they already diagnosed the problem and test drove the car on the previous visit (total 3 miles). They also replaced the gear shifter 2 weeks ago and were aware of the problem. I even did a road test in the car to show the service adviser what exact noise I was talking about.

You should have left a tape recorder running or a camera in your car. There was a guy who's story went viral and got his car bought back off him by the dealer for the mechanic joyriding his Camaro, and he caught it on tape.
