Heater core replacement

So my buddy and I took it upon ourselves to replace the heater core on his 2011 L99. Dear Lord, this is a hell of a project. Anyone else done this themselves? We have the housing out now with the new core in, about to put this back together. We had the windshield removed and pulled the dash, which is the hardest part. Little bolts here and there holding the housing to the firewall... Wow I hope I never have to do this to my LS3!!

Yeah there are 4 bolts only accessible by removing the windshield. It's insanity.

Since you have it torn apart, is there any other way of removing this.

I believe Ofer has a way to remove the dash without removing the windshield.

I believe it's possible by cutting the bolts... But then you can't put new bolts back in. We did the work following AllData's guidelines. It was a pain, but it was done correctly. And even though we are doing the work ourselves, the warranty is covering everything besides the windshield removal and refit, which was $100. Not bad.

I have seen a thread on here somewhere, where you can remove heater core without having to remove windscreen, I believe it involved a die grinder to shorten installed bolts before they were removed from dash that would normally hit on windscreen as they were undone.

I don't know how that's possible because the heads of the bolt (3.5 inch bolts) are less than a half inch from the windshield.

It's not removing the dash that you have to remove the windshield for. It's the heater core.

Correct, technically you are removing the cluster brace that the dash bolts to. It was fun...

wow, that is nuts, i put a heater core in my 93 chevy truck last winter and it took longer to get the hoses off than to get heater core out. what happened? who's designing these things? and is the 14's the same?

I work for a Chevy dealer and I've had to do one on a 2013 with 1,000 miles on it. It was a pain but not too bad of a job. Warranty only pays like 6.8 hours if I remember correctly
