Heatsoak as bad as LS2?
Probably not a lot of information out there about this, but I thought I would get a thread going. My LS2 on my GTO was real bad about heatsoak. I had
a New Era intake on it and it caused a noticable drop in power because of heatsoak. So are you guys gonna leave it stock, go with a closed box system like the GM performance product or go with open element? |

I assume because there is not a lot of air going into the engine bay and the hood scoops don't work? I would assume the maro would be a little better because i had a larger grill allowing more air in.

I agree somewhat, but the majority of the airflow actually comes from the bottom. But I do see the grill opening helping compared to the really aerodynamic GTO.

Hum only time will tell. I am sure GM tested it's design properly. Much more modern tools nowdays for thermal. I did notice the hole is close to the condenser that might be something to look at just as the closest heat source.

There is always a hood with a functional hood scoop on it that directs the air to the intake.

Did the GTO's really have that much of a heatsoak problem?
My 1998 Camaro was designed many years earlier and it doesn't seem to have a problem. Have you measured Intake Air Temperature with a scanning tool when the car is cool versus when it is hot?

^^ Yes and no, mine did not suffer but then again I have a 04, which has the LS1. I do have friends that have the LS2 GTOs and they do suffer from this problem.

all you gotta do is tune it a bit, the pcm pulls timing at lower than necessary temp, you can change the IAT Spark table and get rid of the reduction in timing

Probably not the same type of thing you are talking about but ....
Only heat issues I noticed with the LS1 in my 2000 Camaro SS was that in the summer after driving for extended amounts of time in town (lots of stop and go) there was a VERY noticable difference in the power output. After I replaced the stock thermo w/ an SLP 160degree thermostat I never had issues with power getting robbed from that type of heat...I got the same thermo to help that issue with the LS1 in my vette too....

Heat soak is a problem with stock tuned LS2s. When driving around on a 90 degree day, power is greatly reduced (sluggish in comparison to 70 degree weather). It has a lot to do with the factory tuning.
Once I got my GTO dyno tuned, my GTO didn't seem to be affected all that much by heat soak. Also the New Era intake isn't the best choice for an intake. I had a New Era intake on my 05 GTO and it was really down on power with the factory tune. Later New Era made a new version of the intake because there were so many complaints about power loss with stock tuning. I'm not sure if the version 2 Intake worked any better. I replaced mine with a LPE (Lingenfelter intake) which worked a lot better. But even running the stock airbox, LS2's are down on power driving around in warm/hot air conditions (summer conditions). The Corvette guys would know if the LS3 also suffers from these heat soak issues. |

hmmmm so do you think the 160 thermostat would be a good idea for the new camaro's? or is this not an issue with the ls3?
