The story is that there are some liquor stores that take advantage of the scarcity of this stuff and charge 600% of what the bottles actually MSRP for. The Van Winkles are strongly against stores charging outrageous prices for their product, but once they sell their liquor to the distributors it’s pretty much out of their hands. Now, seems to me that there are some liquor stores who honor what the Van Winkles feel is reasonable for their bourbons, but some don’t. Some stores do a lottery system to be fair on who gets the buy. But others jack the price up and show their real character by raping their customers.

I live in Bourbon country (Kentucky) and this particular bourbon is produced in low volumes and demand is very high. The Bourbon has different levels starting from 10yrs old to 23 year old. Official suggested retail price from the distillery starts about $60 and goes up to $260 for the 23 year old but the stores charge way more than that (that is how you get $450 for the 10 year old). What the market is paying. I have been at a charity auction where a 23 year bottle sold for $900....And they drank it with friends soon after ( i was not on their short list unfortunately)...

We don’t get it in Oklahoma City, but back home in Missouri some stores get a couple bottles of which they have no idea. It’s a surprise to them every year if they get any. It just so happens that I called all 3 liquor stores back home in Missouri and found one that had a couple bottles. I bought both and plan to pick up over Christmas. I did buy some WL Wellers and plan to make some “Poor Mans Pappy” with a 1L charred white oak barrel. The bourbon market is taking off like the craft beer market took off 10-15 years ago.
