Did someone really call the Camaro ZL1 porky on the Camaro5 website? Allow me to show you porky...

ZR1 MSRP $111,000
ZL1 MSRP $54,995

Ring Times
ZL1 7:41.27
ZR1 Cups 7:19.63
ZR1 OE 7:26.4
  • ZR1 Brakes are good for at least 4 seconds or more
  • 50 HP maybe 1
  • Mero currently has three 3 Fastest Ring times, Link has 1. Is Link as fast as Mero? Hard to say, but he has been in a Vette at the Ring since 2008 and has three of the Fastest Ring Times has to be good for two seconds or more
  • Corvette gets a pass on the GM curb height clearance and wheel arch red zone, so ride height is good for another 3 seconds or more
  • Cup tires are good for 6 seconds or more

Our ZL1 is down 22 seconds to the ZR1 with Cup tires and 14 on production tires. If we even the playing field for the ZL1:

Install Brembo GT-R Brakes
Drop the ZL1 20mm with OEM MRC
Get Mr. Link more seat time in the ZL1 at the Ring

Our ZL1 is right there with the ZR1. Add the Cup tires and we pass the ZL1 on OEM rubber and again are on the tail of the ZR1. No tunes. No driveline modifications. All we added are better brakes and restricted to Corvette only ride height. Mr. Link's seat time is not a mod. The brake upgrade is BIG bucks with a retail of over $20,000. No worries. We have enough cash left over to add a SS nicely equipped 5th Gen Vert to our garage

The 5th Gen Camaro is a very capable chassis, very comfortable to drive, very fun and can be very fast in the right hands...but the fact remains that it isn't a feather weight. That's the only point we are trying to get across.

Since we're now on the subject of the ZL1, check out this video of the ZL1 vs. the Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Despite the weight disadvantage the Camaro still comes out on top thanks to superior handling. Overall weight isn't the end all, be all of performance testing and I don't think anyone is trying to argue that... but the fact remains that compared to other performance cars in it's class it's a little heavy.

Now check out the porky ZL1 handing it to the Boss!

If I can get the SS to 3700lbs dry, I would be happy.

Braille battery
Lightweight wheels
Rear seat delete
Passenger seat delete
Headers and exhaust

I believe our cars are 3850lb wet right? So I can see 3700lb dry with those mods given that gas would be about 75lbs with a full tank and the mods should take care of the other 75lbs.

Is this too optimistic or doable?

Yeah that's doable. The stock SS LS3 weighs 3,860 lbs and that's with a full tank and all fluids. A full tank of gas weighs about 115 lbs.
