LSA...meaning?

Hi, all. At the risk of sounding stupid yet again, I need to ask what do the initials LSA for the ZL1 engine mean? Thank you.

The LSA is a designation code(RPO - Regular Production Oder) used by GM for their engines. It is a LS based motor that began use in 1997 and has several codes ranging from LS1, LS3, LS4, LS6, LS7, LS9, etc.

Here's a link to their other codes:

I think the L is for longitudinal, T would be transverse as in engine mounting orientation.

The L means engine. All engine RPOs start with an L, all trans RPOs start with an M.

After the L it's just whatever letters the letter picker chooses. Sometimes the other letters relate a bit to other engines of the same family.

That is in the transmission names.... such as 4L80E.

4 speed, longitude, 80 torque series, electronic shift.

Apparently, there are 107 possibilities for what LSA means. Funny enough, none of them have anything to do with GM.
