Vararam backfire?

While driving on the NYS Thruway tonight, I felt a thump and saw a bright orange flash outside the car. It felt like running over a small rock at 65mph.

I pulled over and saw nothing. The remaining drive was uneventful, with all gauges normal and no check engine light.

The only thing I found when I got home was a huge dead moth on vented side of the chrome breather that attaches to the line that used to run back into the stock intake.

Any ideas what could have caused the thump and flash? Is this a backfire? Something more serious? Should I replace the Vararam with the stock intake?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My Vararam has been on for months, no issues. Don't know what happened, but I really doubt it was the intake.....

Had my vararam for years and never had an issue. I don't think that sounded like a backfire especially caused by the intake,

Where did you see the flash? Like what part of the car?

The flash seemed to be at the front drivers side.

When I inspected the Vararam today, I found TONS of dead bug guts on the wing, radiator heat cover, and throughout the engine bay.

Could I had driven through a swarm of bugs? Could that cause the orange flash?

If it backfired bad enough for the flame to escape your intake, you should see some soot on the inside of the filter at a minimum.

I think the flash may have just been a bug that got burned by the rad

Maybe your intake doubles as a bug zapper.
