So why's it funny? I think it pretty sad. Love it or hate it, that's and iconic car, and I would really hate to see it go. And if it does, don't look for GM or Chrysler to be racing for improvements on the Camaro and Challenger like they do now. This is no good for anyone.

i think it most likely that the mustang has finally gotten competition and its sales numbers have dropped dramatically since the Camaro and Challenger returned to the streets

I'm thinking the Mustang doesn't quite belong on that list. The percentage drop is a little skewed, since the reference year is 2005, the year the retro look came out and they were red hot (selling around almost 160,000 units a year), had a 4 month waiting list, and were selling for over sticker in many cases. And as someone else already mentioned, it was the only game in town in 2005, but not anymore.
People are still driving them, they are just not buying them because everyone interested in one already has one. What would Camaro sales look like in 2017 compared to 2010 if it went mostly unchanged (other than engine upgrades) into its eighth model year, particularly if the new car market in general contracts at that time?

I see so many mustangs down here in Florida. We never get snow so people dont worry about rear wheel drive being an issue. I see tons everywhere, everyday. I'm sure bad winters up north have to do with rear wheel drive being in decline in general.

RWD started making a comeback when powertrains and aerodynamics got efficient enough for large RWD cars to meet the original CAFE, but with the requirement being racheted up again, you can expected RWD to become scarce all over again in the coming years.

Some of that drop can be attributed to renewed competition from the Camaro and the Challenger, but it also needs a refresh. They are all over the road, and need a new look.

Sad comment on the state of Journalism today.
That's why there are so many Mustangs and 300's on the road. Good Lord, what a moron. When the vehicles get a major refresh, watch out, this too will change. I have seen a lot of new 300's around here. No comment on Mustangs other than there are a lot on the road.

Excuse me, but I'm about to call BS on the majority of these cars on this list.
10. Lucerne: Irrelevant, dead. Might I add that it was among the best-selling full size sedans at launch. 9. Colorado: Indeed stale and declining in sales. Again, however, I must add that it was the 2nd best selling midsize pickup in America at launch. 8. Avalon: Never really sold at very high volumes, but Toyota doesn't expect it to. 7. Dakota: Irrelevant, dead. 6. Tahoe: Apparently the rank of "Best-selling SUV in America" means nothing. 5. Liberty: Might have a point there. 4. Silverado: 2nd best selling vehicle in America. GM sells more Silverados every month than Toyota sells Camrys. What this author is smoking, I do not know. 3. Mustang: Again, not supposed to sell at high volumes, although sales have indeed been dampened by Camaro. 2. Taurus: Of course it doesn't sell as well as it used to, it has a much higher ATP and for good reason. 1. 300: Can't argue there, although it still ranks 7th on the list of best selling full size cars in America.

And the article gets even more laughable by calling the F-series "industry leading." Maybe with the F-150, but the Silverado HD still leads the HD class in towing and payload, not to mention it has destroyed the Super Duty in almost every comparison test.
