One more thing about crash standards, pulled from another thread

"So Friday I go in to get my insurance up and running and she tells me it is 371.50 every 6 months. I am like what? She says yep same coverage we carry on the other car. And it is 125.00 less every 6 months than my 2006 Honda Accord V-6. She says it has a note that the car fully complies with 2012 crash standards. She said that must be it."

I don't know what that means, or if the Mustang follows the same rules, just thought maybe that was what bowtieguy was talking about.

The safety standards it doesnt meet are the ones that have to be in place by 2012. So as of now, yes the current Mustang does meet the standards. I think the only things its missing is the roof/door reinforcments, and the side curtain air bags. Believe it meets everything else for the 2012 changes. So yes you can expect some weight to be added. I think Ford is reducing weight to keep all the new addons from making it as heavy as the Camaro/Challenger. I do expect to see some weight added tho. Maybe 150lbs at the most from the new drivetrain/safety features added. With the addons to the 2011 model id say 3700lbs is a ballpark estimate.

The covertible Mustang GT just got a 5 star crash rating a year or two ago, and I would be hard-pressed to believe a car could go from a 5 star rating to a zero rating just like that.

I believe they are revising the safety requirements, thus making them harder. The Mustang which was designed pre-2005 wasn't designed for these, thus the weight. If im not mistaken, and i dont believe i am, the new one will add weight to cope with the new requirements put in place by 2012 i think is the date.

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

Gotcha...that was kinda of my question, when I asked if they were or were not tested against current standards.

So side curtain air bags are also required now?

I dont know exactly what is or is not required, but I know they are becoming very harsh. Harsh enough to add a ton of weight to about every new car on the road that doesnt use expensive weight saving tech.

I have seen no article but these things are not listed with the safety features of the car. Yes side curtain air bags are on the list of items that have to be on all cars by 2012.
