When I was 16, I was no where near ready to handle a real muscle car. I ended up with a 1964 Impala - Six with Powerslide Transmission. What a slug that was. But, it kept me out of trouble.

(And yes I mean powerslide - !!!!!) :-)

Get him like a civic SI or something.... Young crowd thinks they sweet but they're not fast at all....
Not even gonna say anything...

My personal favorite method in dealing with buying a child a car is the match system, if you can afford it of course. Buy him a beater to let him get a feel for the road and develop some driving instinct. Propose him this, if he gets a job, maintains good grades, goes on to college etc, you will match whatever amount he saves toward his new Camaro. Upon graduation, sell his beater, and get him in his camaro using both the money from his beater and what he has saved... then putting the rest in yourself. Or, if you're able to afford it, buy him the Camaro and let him use the money he's saved in college, if he's active and social, he'll appreciate/need it.

Getting him the initial beater does provide him with a sense of ownership and appreciation, along with the drive to earn* so to speak his new Camaro. If he wants the Camaro, that beater will be waxed weekly.

When I was 16 I had a 360 Duster. It was really fast and yes I did some silly stuff in it. No not all the time. It comes down to what you have taught your kids, and your trust in them. I trust my kids in thier driving skills and the cars they have.

If i were you id wait to buy him a camaro for graduation. I am 17 and drive a base cobalt ls. I will be getting a car for graduation in 3 months(either a camaro or sti) and let me tell you it will mean a lot more to him if he has to wait for it.

I dont think its really necessary to install any gps speed tracking or anything. Im not going to lie ive done my far share of dumb stuff in my cobalt but never gotten a ticket or anything and havent hit anything. Driving a car not as nice as a camaro will just help him apricate the camaro even more when he gets it.

No matter how responsible your kid is, at 16 years old if you throw him the keys to a Camaro, you're going to have problems. He may not mean to, but over 300 HP on a virgin driver is going to cause trouble because he won't have the experience to handle it. I'd say something a little more tame, and then maybe a camaro for Graduation.

I don't know if it has been said yet or not, but as long as you don't get the RS package on the V6, the car is govenored at a top speed of 125mph. Most modern 4 cylinder cars can do that much, and the Camaro also has the best safety equipment currently available.

Of course I don't believe in giving any new driver a brand new car. I cheap beater is the way to go. This will give him a chance do develop necissary skills before getting something nice. It will also all you to buy it out right and not have to get full coverage. Lowering your insurance payments.

Never heard that there was a connection between the RS package and the governor... You sure?

It all depends on the trust you have with your son.

I had a '93 V6 Camaro as my first car, was perfect. Looked good, enough HP to have fun with, but not so much that I couldn't handle it.

They make 'nannies' for parents that can be hardwired into the car to watch his speed from home...like a black box for parents. You can easily see what he is doing behind the wheel and police his activities closely to build trust.

On the flip side: the black box could tell you the speed the car was traveling when it hit the stationary object that he did from being inexperienced.

It comes down to trust. If you trust your son, then do what you feel is prudent. Know that he is in one solid assed car that a lot of people on this very board have already walked away from some very serious accidents in. You will not get that in a 20 year old POS Honda.

It's because of the speed rating on the tires. The V6 RS gets the same tires as the SS. The non-rs cars don't have the speed rated tires.
