corvettes LS3 vs Camaros LS3

the corvettes LS3 V8 Engine
http://www.chevrolet.com/corvette/#corvette-coupe

The aluminum-block power plant — standard in coupe and convertible — produces an SAE-certified 430 horsepower @ 5900 rpm and 424 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpm. Power output is even higher with the available dual-mode exhaust system with 436 hp @ 5900 rpm and 428 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4600 rpm. Yet the LS3 6.2L engine achieves a remarkable EPA estimated MPG 16 city, 26 highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission. Even with its impressive performance, the engine does not incur a federal government gas-guzzler penalty.

the camaros LS3 V8 engine

The aluminum-block power plant produces an 422 horsepower @ 5000 rpm and 408 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm. Yet the LS3 6.2L engine achieves a remarkable estimated, 23 highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission

however theres more LS3 engines out there

The LS3 Family – Three New Crate Engines

The LS engine family is expanding once again. This time, we have three powerful new engine offerings to enhance the choices for late-model performance enthusiasts, muscle car and street rod builders, and racers of all stripes.

The three new engines – the LS3 6.2L, LS376/480, and the LS376/520 – continue the LS tradition of breaking new ground for efficiency and performance from a pushrod platform engine.

The LS3 kicks out 430 horsepower and 424 lb.-ft. of torque. The LS 376/480 is an LS3 with an upgraded camshaft that ups power by a whopping 50 horsepower! The LS 376/520 is equipped with an aggressive camshaft and GM Performance Parts' exclusive carbureted intake manifold. That's two simple upgrades that add up to 520 horsepower – a 90 horsepower bump over the stock LS3.

how about a turbocharged or supercharged as a bonus

The LS3 is a really remarkable platform. I'm so glad that the Camaro will be running 2 variations of it.

To quote Talking Heads: "Same as it ever was.....Same as it ever was....."

The Camaro and Corvette have shared engines for a long time now. I'm glad the practice has continued.

The LS3 -and- the entire LSx series of engines should be put into an engine "Hall of Fame." Too bad one doesn't exist, AFAIK.

The LS3 is a fantastic choice for the V8 Camaro.

When I first drove my LS1 i loved it, I still get a rush every time I get in my car. I can't wait to feel the power the LS3 has to offer.

I hadn't noticed that the Camaro makes its power lower than the Corvette does. Interesting . . .

oh, and all hail the Chevy Small Block

I think that must be a misprint, or they are choosing to derate the Camaro by using different RPM ratings. If you calculate the torque needed to generate 422 hp at 5000 rpm (900 less than the vette) it is over 440 ft lbs (at 5000 rpm). My guess is somebody put the wrong number for the hp peak rpm or they just like to keep us guessing. Either way this will be an awesome motor and I think most of us here will never forget the first time we got behind the wheel of an LS1 powered vehicle.

All I'm going to say, GM is always good for HP numbers and we won't know for sure until someone gets it on a dynomometer. I'm guessing it makes peak HP closer to 6000rmp. It's hard to figure out RPM at max HP without knowing what the torque curve is. But a guess it will be making well under peak torque at peak HP, and Peak HP usually comes at a lot higher than 1600rpm below the redline. Lets say since it's similar in design to the vettes ls3 give it max HP at 5900 rpm that requires 375.6 lbft of torque.

There will be a LS-- hall of fame or some kind of "history of the LS-- motors" one day. Years and years from now.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it's a misprint of just misinformation too. SAE certified means that an independent company has tested the engine and certifies that it makes the claimed horsepower.

Everyone claims the vette must be underrated, but conditions have a lot to do with dyno testing. There's an average number for doing the math on driveline losses but that doesn't mean it's always right. This has been gone over a lot in other threads. If it makes 400 at the wheels it doesn't mean the engine makes 500hp. It could just mean the car was tested in great conditions and had very little driveline loss. The Zeta platform seems to suck a lot of hp according to results seen on the g8 boards. Let's hope the camaro is different.

They are one in the same. The Grand Sport is the only difference as far as LS3 and it had dry sump oiling. Those engines are hand assembled too.
