Sequential Turn Signals?

Not long ago on this very forum we were having a discussion about the afterburner tail lamps and how to make the Camaro more advanced in the lighting department and I proposed using sequential turn signals like on the old 1969 Mercury Cougar.

Someone here linked to a bunch of laws and safety regs online that pretty clearly showed that these types of lights were illegal and you could not use them or put them on as aftermarket components without breaking the law.

Now I read that the 2010 Mustang has them as standard equipment? How can they put illegal sequential turn signals on this car?

Does that mean someone can retrofit them on the Camaro legally now?

Interesting...

The tail-lamps, which still feature the traditional three bar look, have been re-shaped and now feature sequential turn signals. When the turn signals are on, the three lamps light in sequence from the innermost to the outer.

i don't see how sequential lights can be illegal. even some of the new semi trucks, school buses, & fire trucks have the animated arrow LED turn signals. how is that any different?

Someone quoted the DOT regulation to me on this forum. It was pretty clear.

Here's the quote you're probably talking about:

Actually, this is the part about sequential turn signals:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_si...l_turn_signals

Quote:
U.S. Federal and Canadian motor vehicle safety standards currently prohibit sequential turn signals. However, Federal standards do not apply to vehicles in use, and so extension of this prohibition to vehicles in use is left as a matter of choice for each state or province. Sequential turn signals are sometimes used on emergency vehicles.

I read thru the FMVSS and didn't see anything about sequential signals. Someone else want to read it?

Wikipedia is ok, but, it can be outdated or just...wrong. FMVSS does require 2 rear signals, one on each outermost corner blabla

I'd like to see if someone can come up with some LED Afterburners or something. I think that would be at least as good as sequentials, IMVHO.

The closest I could find was this:
S5.5.10 The wiring requirements for lighting equipment in use are:
(a) Turn signal lamps, hazard warning signal lamps, and school bus
warning lamps shall be wired to flash;
(b) Headlamps and side marker lamps may be wired to flash for
signaling purposes;
(c) A motorcycle headlamp may be wired to allow either its upper
beam or its lower beam, but not both, to modulate from a higher
intensity to a lower intensity in accordance with section S5.6;
(d) All other lamps shall be wired to be steady-burning.

That specifies that they must flash, but doesn't specify that they can't flash sequentially if there's more than one arranged linearly.

I would have never imagined that those would be illegal. They really don't make a big enough difference for it to be a problem

I don't want sequential signals, leave that to the pony boys. I wouldn't want them to get confused when they see my tailights, which will be very often.

Man, one of the coolest things I remember from childhood is those Mercury Cougar tailamps.

And now Ford brings them back? Very clever move.
