LT fuel requirement
I am going to be ordering in the next few days and I forgot to check when I was looking, but what is the minimum octane requirement for the V6?
Thanks! Johnny |

Regular. I think 87 or whatever the number is.

The V6 should run on 87 octane.

Minimum is 87, runs fine with a little bit of "knocking / ping".
I use 90 octane fuel in my 1LT, I can feel the power now ! |

i was told that using a higher octane than recommended will dirty your engine. any insight?

It shouldn't knock or ping on 87. When I had my '93 Camaro V6, it was programmed to run on 87 and I got a ping on hard acceleration. Took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed the PCM (I think) and problem solved.

no. in some cases it can be a slight waste of money if the computer isnt programed to make use of the higher octane fuel. but the v6 req 87. if you want to run premium, it wont dirty or harm the motor at all

unfortunately the dashhawk isn't able to log thing like the knock sensors or if the computer is pulling timing... BTW, the motor will actually hear the ping before you do... I may have to try playing with it again and go through the item more carefully to see if I can find something useful to monitor...

Thanks again everyone, I just wanted to know what is required so I can estimate my fuel costs. I'm sure I'll put premium in once in a while, just not every time.
I asked the question because it's 11:1, and compression is usually the main factor, but from the little I've learned, it seems the DI helps it to better avoid detonation. I'm guessing this is because it can inject the fuel later during the compression stroke. |

87 or 89 will be fine. anything more will be a waste of money in a 6cyl Camaro due to its timing setup.

I'm at 1,600 mies total and 1,300 miles on 89 - it took 2 tanks to feel the difference from whatever 87 the Dealer put in on delivery. Now it sounds so much better on start-up and idle, and seems like it enjoys the slightly higher octane level on passing or merging.
So for me I'm sticking with 89, preferably from Sunoco.

not necessarily... still a lot of unknowns with the Bosch computer... Some cars like the Mustangs will automatically try to add a bit a timing... The Camaro in theory might be doing the same thing... just don't know... yet... LOL
