Chris82xx/ECS, LSX 427 w/YSi build.

After weeks of sorting out specifics to the short block, things are now in motion for a big build. In December, I brought my car down to ECS for a blower upgrade to a YSi, and to install a set of TSP 260cc, 6-bolt heads. Everything seemed to be going well until ECS discovered a small hiccup. Because of the larger cam, and the degree of the valves on the new heads, there was not enough piston-to-valve clearance. ECS notified me and offered the solution of fly cutting the pistons. Even though it was preached to me that it was a safe solution, I felt it was best to leave the pistons alone.

My suggestion was to build a shortblock. ECS concurred and suggested a 416, with Lunati components and Wiseco pistons. With all the research I've done, I could not find a lot of information on builds with Lunati components. I responded by asking for Callies rods and a Compstar crank. There was no problem with making the switch. I began to think of other block options. Instead of using a standard LS3, what about an LSA. It made more sense because they were already built for boost. So I took my theory to the forums. I got a lot of mixed reviews.

About a day later, I contacted ECS and to my surprise, they had a suggestion that I should've thought of in the first place. Since I already have the 6-bolt heads, why not match them up to a 6-bolt block. The LSX block. The only question left was a 408ci, or a 427ci. That was a no-brainer. However, since we agreed on an LSX, I set a goal for them. I want to break the 1,000 rwhp mark. The response was no problem. After ECS consulted with TSP about the build, I got another call from ECS letting me know that if I wanted to get to 1K, that a Compastar crank may not be the best solution. So after fining tuning the build, this is how the motor will be set up to include the TSP 6-bolt heads:

LSX 427 block
-20cc Wiseco pistons with steel top napier ring
Callies Ultra Billet "I" beam connecting rods
Callies Dragon Slayer crankshaft
58x reluctor wheel
ARP main studs with ARP head studs
ID 850 injectors being swapped out for Bosch 1000cc injectors.

In addition to what is in listed in my sig., I have also the following components that are being added.

Mantic 9000 twin series clutch
GTO clutch resevoir
IDeal Garage clutch master cylinder
Pfadt solid sub-frame bushings
Pfadt coil overs
DBA front/rear rotors with Hawk HP Ceramic pads
LPE launch controller
Hurst Line lock

The goal is to reach 1K whp, which will be going to M/T ET Street Radial II tires. This is also going to be me street driven daily driver. The motor build time expected to be about 3-4 weeks and after that, it's all up to the guys at ECS who will also be taking care of the break-in period too. My time frame for completion is simply this. There will be another D.O.R. competition being held on April 5. I would like to participate in this with the car. Pictures will be up as things progress. Let the fun begin!!

Hey....don't be starting threads like this with no dyno #s!

Sounds like a very durable and potent build, good luck with it.

Very similar to my setup. I have a LSX 427 with calles dragon slayer, ultra billet rods, and Ross pistons. Turn the blower hard enough and 1k will be easy.

I have been researching this set up for a bit.
If the recipe works I'll have ECS build me one too!

Congrats, good call on the 6 bolt block and heads. I'll be following you to see how this goes. Don't know if you ordered parts or even thought about it much but the LSX block weighs about 80 lbs more than the alumminum competition. I don't know the availibility right now. I had to wait a long time to get my block. You are going to have a sweet set-up though.

Excellent. I wouldn't be worried about a goal of 1000rwhp. It's not about that. The big cubes and ysi will make a ton of low/midrange power. That's were it's at.

We have many builds of this nature, we have been building them like that for over ten years now in the Corvette/GTO/CTSV/camaro platform. Same engines, just a different box.

There was no problem with availability of any of the parts. Between ECS, and myself talking to TSP, they won't want to hear from us for a long time. It wasn't the block I was worried about them not having, it was actually the crank. It's a very popular and proven crank, that's why sometimes it can be difficult to get. There was not a single issue with any of the parts being in stock. Everything is already in stock. The added weight I'm not overly concerned with. My car is a convertible, so I'm already at a disadvantage with weight to begin with.

You plan on racing Jamie when it's done. Or just shooting for a 1000 hp 12s car.
