passenger air bag activation

My wife weighs 110 lbs and when she gets in the passenger seat most times the airbag activation will not come on. Sometimes it works when she wiggles or jumps up & down on it. Seems to me it should be a little more sensitive than that! The dealer has no clue. He gave me some bull that it may or may not work depending on her seating position. She tried every possible position, sometimes it works and most times it doesn't. Anyone else see this problem?

Sounds like the air bag module/computer needs to be reprogrammed. Ed M.

I'd find another dealer. Your wife may fall into the "small stature adult" category but 110lbs should still be enough to trigger the sensor. If you can't find another dealer to help you out, contact GM. I'm sure they'd rather not have a lawsuit if the airbag fails to deploy in an accident. Your dealer could care less, except that he already knows you've reported the issue with it and that makes him partially responsible.

Quote:
Front Passenger Detection System -- To avert potential injury risk from high-pressure airbag inflation, the front passenger detection system will suppress air bag deployment if a child or person of small stature is sensed sitting on the passenger seat. It also senses the presence of a child restraint on the seat, and will suppress airbag deployment accordingly.
The detection system uses a mat sensor embedded in the passenger seat that establishes the occupant’s weight and weight distribution. If this is below a certain level, the sensor alerts the SDM central control unit and the front passenger airbag will not deploy. It senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.

I was in the passenger seat a while back with one of my friends, and for some reason it wouldn't activate unless i jumped up & down. Which was a little annoying, it happened twice.

My airbag doesn't come on when there's someone light (110 - 120 lbs) in my passenger seat. But I make them tilt the seatback as far foreward as possilbe while also sitting straight upright and it comes on each time.

I had this problem with my light not activating and turning off while driving. I took it into the dealership and they hooked it up to the computer. They did a download and a reprogram. This whole process took about an hour and was covered by my warranty. Since we did this last week I have not had any problems. Just contact your dealer and talk to them. They looked it up on the system and said that it was a noted problem, and just told me to bring it on in to get fixed.

Hope this helps!
