Going 30 mph in 3rd gear might be say 2500 rpms. Going 30 mph in second gear is say 4000 rpms. In order to shift to from third to seconds without being jerky and clunky, you need to give the engine some throttle while the clutch is pushed in to get it up to 4000 rpms. So a quick pressing of the gas pedal gets the rpms up so when the clutch is let out, the engine and the driveline are spinning at the same speed so there is no jerkiness and a very smooth shift. Heel and Toe is being able to do this while you're braking. That's why I explained rev matching first. |

I had practice at an early age, around 10 years old in our small pickup truck. After a couple of bog outs and peel outs I eventually learn to match rev the rpms to catch the gear. It takes time to get it down but start off with the basics, nothing too fancy. The scariest thing I think is just trying to keep the car from not stalling while at a hill stopped. You'll learn to be quick with your feet

I was reading in motor trend that the new Nissan 370Z does this for you, they said that the computer blips the throttle and it outperforms their heel-towing.

I always figured to walk the tight rope of keeping the clutch grabbing and the throttle up enough to keep the car stationary on a hill then just giving it more gas from there.

This is a very bad idea, I used to do the exact same thing..until I had to pay for another clutch, believe me, keeping your car from moving by keeping the clutch out just enough is extremely hard on your clutch/tranny. |

I have to imagine that with 304 and 400+hp on tap hills won't be as big of an issue as they are for stick-shift econoboxes.

Great vid. on the heel toe. I however will be buying an automatic tranny. I can drive anything, but after 10 years of driving a Tractor Trailor and owning a standard transmision vehicle, the thrill is GONE shiffting gears.
