Good God, and some Americans actually have the nerve to call Canada socialist. That's insane!
Here in Alberta, Canada we pay a 5% tax when we buy the car (a federal goods & services tax). That's it. There isn't any Provincial Sales Tax in Alberta. There isn't any of this 'excise' tax everyone is going on about. We don't have any toll roads. We don't have this 'city income tax' that some people have mentioned. (you pay to work in a city???) My annual property tax is 0.008% of my house/land value.

Pretty much once I buy my car the only ongoing expense is gas, car insurance and license renewal (60 bucks/year). Plus any of the normal maintenance costs. I just got my car insurance estimate and it's going to cost me about 2 bucks/day to use my Camaro as my daily driver (112 kms round trip every day - 70 miles daily). Admittedly most of that mileage is highway driving (110km/h speed limit). For my American friends, the traffic moves at an average speed of 75-80 mph for most of my drive. No pot holes to speak of. When one shows up it's filled by the next day.

I've heard American tourists going on about how Alberta is the driving capital of Canada (motorcyclists go nuts here). With the condition of our highways and speed limits, some of the tourists get positively giddy. I'm starting to see why!!

I heard that the federal government wants to add a tax to everyone's plate in all states, so they can get some more money. Possibly we'll in up paying double.

Come on recovery business cycle, so we can get back to prosperity.

I have to renew my plates in July, but I'm not expecting them to be more than $250. They go by value of the car here in MI, and my more expensive GMC 2500 HD SLT was never more than that. The property taxes on my house just went down too due to decreased assesment value. Not sure I should be happy about that...

I hope your roads truly are paved in gold there in MA. I know for everything we pay in MI, our roads SUCK... but we don't have excise tax nor many toll roads...

OH, AND first and foremost, your income is taxed by the state before you even have a chance to spend it on anything... at least here, not sure about MA.

When I worked in Detroit it was the worst thing in the world that I had to pay an income tax just to WORK in the city... not sure if that's supposed to cover parking or law enforcement or something, but from my time down there, I'm pretty sure it just covered Kwame's parties and Navigators...

OK - End rant, sorry
Oh, i'm sorry, I forgot a few things. We have a 5.9% state income tax that we voted to lower on a referendum ballot initiative. It was supposed to be 5% but Dukakis "temporarily" raised it by .9% twenty years ago. The pols ignored the ballot initiative and it is still 5.9%. Our present governor Deval Patrick, is talking about putting transponders in our inspection stickers to tax us by mileage. He is looking into getting the open road toll scanners like the ones in Illinois. If he gets those, all it will take to turn a non toll road into a toll road will be to erect one of the scanning towers. He has proposed a tax on candy and soda pop. I call this his lollypop tax. People don't get it, they vote in people like carpet bagger Deval and Barrack (both are from Chicago) and then whine about the high taxes. In the very next election, they go to the polls and vote in more of the liberal tax and spenders and complain some more. No-one in this state will ever admit to voting for these douche bags, so either everyone lies or the elections are rigged. What if they had taken last years "stimulus money and had sent it back to us tax payers? Do you think that when we started spending it we would have done some economy stimulating? One more thing, we must renew our registrations every two years unless it is a motorcycle regitration, then it must be done every year. (Riders are low lifes, therefore it is OK to discriminate aginst them) Of course, there is a "nominal" fee for this. And our roads are paved really good in between the foot deep pot holes.

Not until they stop the runaway spending, which we know that they will not do. The liberals buy their votes by taking our money and doling it out.

I actually almost wrecked my car when I first moved up here because of the potholes. In Billerica, they just put cones over them, instead of fixing them. It blows my mind what the tax dollars go towards... it's odd because in some towns like Bedford, the potholes are fixed the very next day, yet in Billerica, they just keep the cones on them for a few weeks...

Heaven forbid you actually drive your car over one and destroy it, it wouldn't be the towns responsibility at all. They don't even have the lanes painted in Billerica anymore.

Here in NY, again, we don't pay an excise tax, however, we do already pay taxes on Pop, Candy, vitamin water, etc. With the problems that NYS is having with its budget, I don’t think it will be long before we pay an excise tax on our vehicles here too. It is bad enough that the Governor wants to hold back our State Refund checks. (Yea and for those who owe the state, if they are one day late filing, they get penalized. Go figure, SCREW the little guy.) If they hold on to my refund past April 15th, can I charge them 100% on my refund per day? Think not! Anyway, even though we don’t have excise tax, we still have our own issues here too. So much for a FREE COUNTRY/FREE STATE we live in.
