My dealer requires a $1000 deposit. Is this in line or a rip off?

I also placed a $1000 refundable deposit. No big deal and in line for respectable dealers.

WOOOHOOO I HAVE 20 CARS LEFT!!!

No, just kidding. I'm not buying into the "We have allocation left" AT ALL. When you're cars don't arrive by September 30th - you'll know if you been had.

Now if you want to wait until AFTER 10/1/09, let's talk!

So if my dealer told me today that they have allocation left and I can order now and get in on the original allocation, that means I'm being BS'd? Just wondering because I was actually going to go down and place an order tomorrow. Seriously.

First dealer I went to wanted $4000 and nonrefundabled. Second dealer $500 and refundable. The dealer said they would have no problem selling the car if I backed out so its a win/win situation for them!

I have, one wanted $5000 and another said I could talk him down to $3500 in the city, and yes, non-refundable. I found a dealership in lower west MoFN that only wanted $1000 refundable and guaranteed MSRP, I went with him.

No, hes saying there are alot of sold orders and alot of the dealers first allocations are spoken for. Im sure there are some dealers with open allocation left. You just need to find out for sure what his position is.

put down 500 deposit and dealer was an idiot.
went to a new dealer and dealt with the GM and he ordered my car with no deposit. Told me the same thing, if you change your mind i wont have any problem selling it!

I paid $2000 non refundable, but I told them if there are any screw ups I will extract 2000lbs of blood out of them. LOL!! In all honesty I think no dealer will keep your money, they only say non refundable in order for you to be committed with them. JMHO.

I wouldn't automatically assume your dealer wouldn't have any left, but some will tell you that just to sell another car. Where in NC are you from? I talked with my dealer last week in Greenville, NC and he had 3 out of 7 allocations left and they didn't require a deposit to be put down and will sell at MSRP. The dealer is Phelps Chevrolet in Greenville.

I finally placed my order yesterday. Dealer, who is on the MSRP or lower list, wanted $1000 deposit. We negotiated it to $500. When it came time to hand over the check, he said non-refundable. Not a big deal to me because I will not back out, no way no how. However, nothing on the order sheet said anything regarding whether deposit was refundable or not, and I did add language (and had asst. mgr. sign it) that said not to exceed MSRP existing on 2/20/09).
