Did you guys read the entire article? First off, both Wagoner (before the bailout) and Ford's Bill Ford Jr. both advocated for higher gas taxes in the past. This is not related to "Government motors" or even just GM.

And what he was suggesting was a gas tax in lieu of the increased CAFE standards which will drive prices up on cars by as much as $3500. Anytime you hear "raising taxes", everyone immediately jumps to the conclusion that it's someone trying to reach deeper into your pockets. But the economics here would suggest that increasing the gas tax rather than forcing higher CAFE standards would cause more people to buy more fuel efficient cars, thereby dropping the cost of oil (absorbing much of that tax in lower prices in the long run) and saving you that extra $3500 per car.

Automakers are in a tough "catch 22" right now where they are being forced to make more fuel efficient vehicles at a greater expense to them (to comply with these upcoming CAFE standards), but few people are buying them still, so it's hurting them financially to have to comply. (there have been more than 40,000 camaros so in 2011 vs less than 2,200 volts)

The guy didn't become a socialist overnight. There must be something to that logic regarding CAFE if so many automaker CEOs have pushed for it.

People like to use Europe as an example of high gas prices, but they are the WORST example. For instance, public transit and the ability to ride bicycles/walk to most places is vastly superior in Europe as opposed to the US. Also, the average person in Europe isn't travelling 50+ miles a day to get to work.

You get roughly 10 miles outside of a major city, you might not see anything but a 500 population "town" for an hour....

They phaze out the big stuff less turnover and setup of factories and build higher profit vehicles since their margins on larger vehicles is not very good vs 20% + for the smaller cars. More gas taxes is not going to solve our problems, it will just put more people out of work. As stated above let the consumer make thier own decisions on what they want to drive. JMHO not worth much but
That is the problem, and GM is not the only large company guilty of this—they all do it. Problem is, these companies don't want to be burdened with anything; they just pass it on to the consumer. As consumers, we don't have that luxury. Similar thing happened with electric rates around here. People were getting more energy efficient and using less energy. This led to lower profits by the utility company. So what do they do? Raise elec. rates of course. Then again, this is nothing new. It'
s just greed. Plain & simple.

So its ok for every single driver in the country to have to pay higher gas prices so a few people can pay $3,500 less on a new car. That's crap man.

I'd rather pay the $3,500 extra because in the long run it will probably be cheaper for me.

Besides the CAFE standards aren't about the economy its just part of the "Green" crap taking over the world and being less reliant on foreign oil.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

On another note are foreign manufacturers required to adhere to CAFE standards to sell their products in the US?

I am reading the same thing here. However, the margins on smaller cars are not as good as the larger vehicles (look at the rebates on these bigger more expensive). Futhermore, pushing for cheaper better gas mpgs cars WILL benefits the Japs and Koreans a lot more than the US companies. Regardless of reality, perceptions with the consumers right now and for the foreseeable future are that JAPs/Koreans make better and more fuel efficient models than US. Pushing for a big gas tax to put the burden on the consumers by the US's CEOs to ease their CAFE's requirements is stupid. Here we go again with another recession. His other comment about the debt ceiling is also typical of a bean counter. Let's continue to spend more than what we have via credit cards/limits...Eventually the debts would just disappear LOL....Personally, I would love to be able to do this: just have a guaranteed 10-20% increase on my credit limit so I continue to spend without the needs to reduce my spending.....

First, I undestand the anger. I'm not for any additional taxes....PERIOD.

However, before you crucify GM or Akerson, please remember that every CEO has touched on this, including Mulally if I recall correctly. Even Lutz has said it.

Now what you are all missing is what CAFE is doing. CAFE is forcing everybody to build and sell smaller cars. But if gas stays in the 3 to 4 dollar range, what customer will buy a smaller car? Full Size Truck sales are still cruising right along at 4 bucks per gallon.

I don't think Akerson is suggesting that they tax us just because he thinks we should pay more taxes.

He is trying to make a point with the Government that if you are removing the free market from the manufacturers, you have to take the next step.

CAFE doesn't care if gas goes down to $2/gallon. It is driving draconian measures that will not be cheap and are causing ALL OEMs to spend and invest in technlogies that are being required to meet CAFE, not market demands.

Are any of you demanding a 62 MPG car? Are any of you demanding a car or truck with less than 100 g of CO2 output? No, it's being legally mandated. But if you aren't demanding it, are you willing to pay for it? Not likely.

So, yes, be POed, just not at GM or the other OEMs. This is just the natural discussion that has to happen when you legally require the auto companies to produce cars that the customer isn't demanding, asking for or more importantly, willing to pay a premium for.

CAFE is being pushed by the EPA. The EPA has always had different flavors during the different administrations. They are typically more aggressive when the "green"/democrats are in power.

I'm not sure what he's implying here, but it doesn't exactly reek of confidence in the product. He really needs to think more before he opens his mouth:

"Akerson wants to boost sales of luxury cars, and next summer will launch two new Cadillacs: the XTS and an unnamed compact. "They're not going to blow the doors off," he said, "but they will be very competitive."

while as my other statement saying that i was pissed at gm is not entirely true its our government and us not standing up and saying F-OFF! this has to be the worst 8 yrs that Americans have seen in a such a long time....someone mentioned that it was the bush adminstration that proposed this..fine but who is pushing it? I dont know bout you but no congressman or senator nor president is getting any type of vote from me who is telling me what i can and cant buy and pushing more taxes on me....period. This is still a democracy and we have the say what goes on in this country and i cant believe that i fight for this type of government everyday, it makes me sick and pissed along with many other servicemember that i work with day in and day out....the things you ppl dont see everyday we do...so take a stand ppl write your congressman and tell them you are not going to be legally forced to buy what they want you to buy. our freedoms that many of us fight for are fading away faster then we think
