Couple Of Random Questions * Paddle shifters

i recently set out to buy a manual car, i was helped here finding the correct web-sites to go to, but then when i had found the car i liked like a ton of bricks it hit me...isnt the camaro getting those "pull the trigger" type shifters? until i learn if this is true or not i'll put it off...

2. another's about my car..i went to get a tune up recently and asking the mechanic there i asked "hey man, my car's reaching 100,000 miles, when do you think i should change my transmission oil?"
he replies: seriously man i think the time's passed, you should wait until you have real trouble with it, and just wait til it dies...

now i ask..is this true? must i wait until my trans dies and get another? will nothing help me? i dont really wanna drag away from my camaro funds =/

1. I've heard nothing regarding "paddle shifters" (if that's what you're referring to?) for the new Camaro.

2. Get a 2nd opinion regarding your transmission. Personally, I'd change the fluid, assuming you like your car and want to keep it in good working order. I don't know anything about the mechanic whom you visited, but I'm disappointed in his advice.

On the trans the question is, how long are you going to keep this car? I had a beater that if i had changed the fluid in it, it would have leaked like a sieve. So it got ran into the ground (ford escort, yes it was a BEATER, but it lasted)

If your going to keep the car, yes get it changed if the fluid shows it needs it and perform the right maintenance.

If the Camaro is getting paddle shifters, it won't be on the manual transmission. It will be on the automatic. That's the way it is on the corvette.

+1. Chances are it will get them....but, it's a paddle-shifted Automatic. You'll still have the choice of your good-'ole Manual. No worries, there.

And with the Mechanics, advise...mmmm, do you have a drivers manual? B/c, it'll tell you in there when the fluid should have been changed. If not, at 100,000 miles (and no change to date) Go for it. It can't hurt the car. Something about that advise just doesn't sit right with me......

Most new GM cars are offered with automatics with some sort of manual shifting mode. Saturn and Chevy gets steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

As far as the transmission fluid, if you start having problems with leaks, slippage, or sticking, try some trans-x. It works really well on high mileage cars. Also, many cars now have "lifetime" transmission fluid that shouldn't need to be changed unless something goes bad. Maybe your car doesn't have that.

its a 01 impala, i have the drivers manual and to me its defenetely a keeper, i love the hell out of that car, and theres 2 mechanics i go to, the one that gave me that advice i rarely go to, i go to a friends shop..i've known him scince high school and he tells me otherwise, as for the transmission itself? the car runs smooth, i have no leaks or complains right now, i just know it had to be made weather i've missed its time or its time is now or near future, my question really was like, i've heard many cases when they go through this (transmission oil change) more than a handful of people say they paid for the service but end up having to get a new transmission, so i wanted to avoid one or the other ya know, but i'll see what my manual tells me - thx guys


as for the camaro if the automatic comes with those paddle shifter things, i'll defenetely be getting that..because of the concern of my impala right now i'll lay off learning full manual..but then again,tis income tax season

On the tranny fluid...I have heard that unless you have changed it early on 30,000 to 40,000 you are better off not to change it later. Something to do with the new fluid breaking down the build up from the old fluid and clogging the various channels and fluid passages in the tranny. No personal experience however.

i'm off tomorrow from work, i checked it out online as well and came along this, read the comments people posted, i'm second owner to the car, i got it with 80k miles on it and i just want to know what it is i should do. more than likely i'm thinking i will change the fluid and filter and pretty much follow what that web-site says...oh yea heres the link to it

Check this out. This is a podcast from the GM Fyi blogs. Unless I am much mistaken, they say something about tranny-fluid changes, that is VERY similar to your issue.

Although GM's new autos aren't nearly as bad as most other Automatics, yes, it still robs a little more Hp than a stick. Paddle shifted or not, and auto's an auto.

take for instance the '08 Vette. 0-60 times differ by only .1 seconds between the two trannys.

i havent finished reading the responses on the thread, but i will tell you now, with the 4l60e (and most autos) if you haven't changed the fluid before 40k, ur better off waiting till something breaks. reason bein is that when you change it, you are draining out some of the gunk that is (poss) holding things together. now while that might sound bad, its actually good. ive seen/read too many times where someones tranny was doin just fine and they changed fluid and a week later, their tranny went out. ur best bet is to wait till something goes out, then rebuild ur tranny. you can however change ur filter and what not and still be ok. also you can add some tran-x or other additives to increase the longevity of your tranny. hope this helps.


and as for paddle shifters... i dont see them being standard equipment on the new camaro, there might be an upgrade package that you can get them, but i wouldnt count on them as a production item. tho for all you 4l60e guys and other auto drivers... check out www.retrotekspeed.com they make a conversion kit for our cars for paddle shifters
