Grinding V6 brakes???
I know it doesnt sound very safe, but thats what a lot of 4th Gen guys do to get 15" wheels on their cars. I should have v6 brakes on my ss next weekend. Anyone think it is possible to grind the calipers down, safely, enough to get a 15" wheel on??? |

Do you mind if I ask why you are doing this?

If I can fit a 15" wheel it will open up basically every possible wheel for the 5th gen car. I want to run a 15x8" or 15x10" rear with a 15x3.5 front...

It just seems that there would be a better option than grinding brake calipers that weren't designed to slow your car down. I wasn't aware you were using this as as dragstrip car. Are their any aftermarket brake manufacturers that sell smaller brakes for 15" or 16" wheels, while not losing much in terms of braking power? That way you wouldn't have to take any safety risks. Just a thought. I would look at what brake manufacturers drag racers are using for the appropriate sized wheels. Hope that helps!

Not a whole lot out for the 2010 Camaro. As of right now it seems that we will have to make due by swapping to v6 brakes. I will do some experimenting with the v6 calipers. See about having them machined down for extra clearance, yet still being able to maintain its structural integrity under maximum piston pressure. If that can be accomplished you should have no problems still driving the car on the street.

The V6 calipers are gonna be fine, they gotta be 3 times better then you found on V8 4th or 3rg gens and they stopped fine.
thinking cause its a V6 part will make it crap is small minded in all the wrong ways. |

I am not worried at all about the braking power of the v6 brakes. GM wouldn't allow them to hit the road if they weren't at least an average brake that can get the car stopped without much effort. Saying that, "average" brakes by today's standards will still be more powerful and reliable than most of the cars on the drag strip due to the fact that most of those cars are home-built and still use factory brakes from their era.

V6 parts are not crap, WongBob was asking about a safety concern switching to them. I think its important to understand how these systems are designed to work efficiently. Making a move to calipers with a different piston area, without using the appropriate master cylinder bore, power booster, and abs system (when different), carries its own set of disadvantages and/or safety issues. Then add to that, modifying the caliper by removing material, and you begin to see where making a move to a proper brake package designed for drag racing may be a good idea, were it available. You may find that you wont even need to grind them down at all! Then I would just swap out the master cylinder at minimum, to the V6 and test it out! Good luck! Keep us updated on the project. |

GM hasn't even been known for making allot of different parts, though I don't know the 5th gen braking sytem to detail, Id bet the master is the same, any change might might be in the prop valve, valving.
