Depends. Is value in the equation? Do you care about dyno figures?

IMHO a custom dyno tune is best.

Im not too sure if a custom dyno tune is worth the $550 or not since hand held programmers with a reputable company tune can get the car just about perfect.

I had a X3 programmer with a tune from a well known company, and then decided to go with a custom dyno tune after hearing that this was the best way to tune the car. Well, the custom dyno tune also from a well known shop, didn't increase the peak hp at all, it did increase hp/tq some along the curve but overall numbers didn't really change. The Air/Fuel ratio was cleaned up a bit, but is this minimal gain really worth the money, I'm not sure I would spend the $550 if I had to do it over again. Just my thoughts.

not everyone charges 550 for a custom tune. how much was your programmer. I bet I charge way less.....

also, if you are basically stock or minor stuff like a cat back, they will be close regarding peak power numbers. there is much more that can and should be done in a tune though....

if you have a cam, headers, or supercharger, etc, you need a custom tune. even the tunes that come in supercharger kits aren't very good. but that's not easy to get right from a can. lots of variables.
