Why is this so cheap? Gear 3.91
Hello guys,
I would like to swap the rear gear ratio of my car. I was shopping around online and curious about the price difference I found for a 3.91 at about $289 and a 3.70 at $589! 3.91 at$289 http://www.phastekperformance.com/20...-gears-391.htm 3.70 at $589 http://www.phastekperformance.com/20...l380011410.htm Why would there be such a difference? Thank you very much Last edited by Jeffy14; 12-22-2013 at 02:54 PM. |

Not sure, but maybe it's because the GM 3.91 gear is used in a production car (SS/1LE) and more common?

Laws of supply and demand.
The 3.91's are made by AAM for GM for use in the 1LE. GM buys more of a bulk and at one time than an individual company so they get sold to GM for less which results in lower prices for us. Also because GM sales more gears they also don't need as much as a profit per unit as other companies. |

OK guys thanks
So do you think it is worth it to take 3.91 i/o 3.70? I read somewhere that 3.91 or more could cause failure. Is that true? |

Depends on if you have an auto or manual. Generally I see 3.70 recommended for auto, and 3.91 recommended for manual.
I'm swapping out my 3.45 for a 3.91, based on the MANY positive recommendations from others on this site. I've yet to come across someone who regrets getting the 3.91 gear. |

<--- It's in my signature. LS3 = manual (L99 = automatic).
I have a couple of threads in this forum where I tried to get feedback from the forum members regarding the 3.91 gear. You might want to search around for those or other similar discussions about the gear swap for the automatic. |

OK guys thanks a lot so now the big question that have been asked over and over again.
Is 3.91 too much for automatic if I just have a tuning done and new cat back. Ivan seems to say this is fine? Even with what I have? People seem to say it will just tear tires etc.... The consensus is 3.73 for Automatic. Ivan what do you say please? |

3.91 gears not available in the usa?? I searched several sites, I came to buy and make payment in www.partstaxi.com, only that they canceled the purchase, said they do not have the product available, paid early, I'm expecting to return the money, still not returned. should put an availability before announcing. I want to buy oem gm 3.91 gears. but so far no availability. a friend called an authorized gm, and said that the gears do not have any prediction of availability
