2012 ZL1 vs. 2012 Boss 302

Had to do it, since the numbers are out for the Boss 302....

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...est/index.html

A quick run down, MT managed a 4.0 0-60 (actually a 3.97) but said there was more to be had. The 1/4 mile was a 12.3@115.8mph but again, there is more to be had. MT admitted that the adjustable shocks would take some time to work out the best times and the Boss took some time to get use to.

Lap times around Laguna Seca was 1:40.2 and 1:40.4...
Standing records at Laguna Seca
1. Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR 1:33.92
138 mph

average
2. Devon GTX 1:35.08
136 mph

3. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 1:35.80
135 mph

4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon 1:37.40
133 mph

5. Porsche 997 Turbo facelift 1:37.80
133 mph

6. Porsche 997 GT3 1:39.52
130 mph

7. Porsche 997 Turbo 1:39.89
130 mph

8. Porsche 997 Turbo S 1:40.11
130 mph

9. Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI 1:40.20
129 mph

10. Ford Mustang Boss 302 1:40.21
129 mph

11. Nissan GT-R 1:40.45
129 mph

12. Mercedes SLS AMG 1:40.74
129 mph

13. Audi R8 4.2 FSI quattro 1:40.75
129 mph

14. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 1:40.90
129 mph

15. BMW M3 (E92) 1:42.96
126 mph

16. Porsche Cayman S(facelift) PDK 1:43.00
126 mph

17. Porsche Cayman S 1:43.00
126 mph

18. Aston Martin V12 Vantage 1:43.04
126 mph

19. Cadillac CTS-V 1:43.90
125 mph

20. Shelby GT500 1:44.30
124 mph

21. Shelby GT500 1:44.72
124 mph

22. Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500KR 1:44.72
124 mph

23. Porsche 997 Carrera
1:45.00
123 mph

Looks like the GT500 is on its way out, the 5.4 will most likely go with it... The all forged 5.0 will take its place... I had my fingers crossed that Ford would use the Ford Racing catalog parts that Shelby used in the 2011 GT350 and it looks like I got my wish...

So.... Will the ZL1's 100+hp, 120+ft tq and MRC be enough to handle the Boss 302? Or will Ford have to bring out the Boss 302 LS? Will the GT500 step aside for the SVT Cobra to do battle with a FI forged 5.0? Will the Z28 arise to meet its life long nemesis?

This is just the Boss 302, not the Laguna Seca and next year Ford releases the 1970 edition as this is only the 69... Bring your thick skins because the Boss 302 just out paced the Z06... and according to MT

While the new Camaro ZL1 has improved suspension and a lot more power, we don't think it stands a chance against this Boss on a racetrack. But we look forward to finding out.

Around the track, no. The ZL1 has NO chance, there is no way it's gonna put up better times than it's Zo6 brethren (which the boss has already surpassed). With that in mind, at the strip, it will definitely be faster then the boss, right on par with the gt500.

It's very impressive that it ran a 1:40.x around Laguna Seca which is a couple ticks faster than where the 2006 z06 came in. The Mustang MUST be good, but its 500 lbs heaver than the z06, higher CG, and a lot less HP. I don't think these times are an apples to apples comparison.

I think the time similarities come down to better tires and an amazing driver in the Mustang. Anytime a mfr. flies in a driver, you know it's going to be a fast time. Not trying to take anything away from the Mustang and I seriously want one, I'm just realistic in that I don't expect to go to my local track days and seeing Boss's keeping pace with z06's in the actual track day environment.

Once the comparisons come out, we will know better how good it actually is. I hope I eat crow and this car is actually as fast as the 1:40 time indicates.

I don't think ZL1 could keep up. On a different track - maybe. It's looking like that Boss is pretty stout, but it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison, IMO. Regardless - it's performing really well.

With these numbers I might just have to put up the ugly back end. I'll just walk around the front. LOL

I didn't see the 2011 GT500 PP time's at LS, so its kinda hard to say its on its way out before it even got a chance to compete. I still haven't seen the Boss pull over 1.0g like the GT500 did in its very first test or 119mph traps. Do we have a Boss 302 lap time at VIR so we can compare the two?

I like the boss a lot and I would love to see the 2 duke it out on a good smooth track like LS or VIR.

The Boss hasn't run VIR yet. That was the first road it was run on, there are some editors getting close to that 1:40 as well, I think a few beat the M3's 1:42 in the Boss but each person only got two laps. There are no official times but some of the SCCA guys claim the '11 GT500 PP can beat the CTS-V at Laguna at around 1:43 but that is unofficial.

I don't know if the Boss can pull a 1g or not, it depends if you get the shock adjustments right. Most of the mags don't have time to play with them much or just don't know what to do.

You will not see the Boss trap a 119mph speed ever, We have to wait to see what Evan can do but I doubt 119mph is possible.

That being said, the only vehicle's in the top 20 under $60,000 are the Boss 302 at $43,000 as tested and the GT500 at $51,000. I also doubt the Boss can pull mid to low 11's with just slicks so that value right there.

You wouldn't want to road race a supercharged V8 anyway, the heat soak would be horrible.. Supercharged V8 engines are for 1/4 mile cars another reason you will see the Z06 destroy the ZR1 if it was a full race and not just a 2 lap run...

No No, you misunderstood me... Its not out just because the Boss runs better in this test. Shelby and Fords contract is up this year, the 5.4 is no longer global, Ford has just designed the forged 5.4 replacement and TiVCT is waaaay too expensive to develop for the 5.4... There are just too many cards stacked against the GT500 and 5.4 now. And the TR6060 is a contracted for only one engine... and the Boss is $10k cheaper.. and the new dual powertrain control module was designed for the 5.0 only...

You're probably right, there might not be a GT500 for the 2013 model year. Ford probably will wait until the redesign in 2014 to bring back the SVT Cobra.

That's why the Boss is filling that gap right now. It might be the highest trim level for 2013.

I would suspect that Ford will phase out the 5.4L for the 2014 Cobra. I'm guessing that we'll be seeing a twin turbo direct-injection all forged 5.0L based drivetrain. I'm willing to bet at around 6 psi, it will make around 600 horse power with similar torque.

We have yet to see, however, I think that if the Boss has to go it alone for the 2013 model year, then it'll do just fine.

Couldn't have said that better myself, The SVT Cobra would use a Twin Turbo forged Boss engine using twin Garrett's in the valley. Unless Ford wants to go out with a bang and bring the Cobra out for its 20th anniversary in 2013. Ford will have to cut production of the V6's and GT's anyway so thats more room for special models that will obviously sell.

I believe we will see a new Cobra by model year 2014. Also believe it will be a forged 5.0 with forced induction.

Is there any concrete info out there regarding the future of the GT500?

I looked but couldn't find ANYTHING. Just a bunch of e-thug speculation.

That my friend will never happen I guarantee you that.. Hell the 5.0L GT would go out even before the V6 does(if it ever got to that). Dude the V6 and GT are their bread and butter... Trust me. that is a negatory..
