After months of speculation, teaser photos and heavily camouflaged prototypes caught testing on the roads of Italy and the famed circuits of Europe, Ferrari's next-generation supercar was revealed Tuesday morning at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

All this for a car called LaFerrari. And it's a hybrid.

That's right; the highlight of the Geneva show and one of the most widely anticipated debuts of all of 2013 is a car whose name translates to TheFerrari. And it's not a Ferrari LaFerrari. It's just LaFerrari. And no, it has nothing in common with Renault's Le Car, including an expected price of more than $1 million.

Although the name of this supercar may not live up to that of its predecessor -- the Enzo, named for the founder of the company -- the performance specs definitely will.

The LaFerrari has a whopping 949 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, with 789 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque coming from a 6.3-liter V-12 engine with a righteous 9,250 RPM redline and a 13.5:1 compression ratio.

Working with this V-12 is an electric motor making an additional 161 horsepower, while a second, smaller electric motor powers the car's ancillary systems. Power is pushed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed, dual clutch gearbox.

LaFerrari's batteries weigh just 132 pounds and are mounted to the chassis. The car recharges them with regenerative braking when slowing down, and by using the engine's excess torque when it's not needed -- during cornering, for instance.

The chassis of the LaFerrari is made from several composite materials including carbon fiber and Kevlar. The driver and passenger seats are part of this structure and are built right into the composite tub. When it comes time to adjust your driving position, you don't move closer to the steering wheel and pedals, they move closer to you.

Ferrari didn't reveal the curb weight of the car, but it's expected to be around 2,800 pounds. That's about the same as an average compact car. Add 949 horsepower to this mix, and you have a potent supercar, as indicated by the LaFerrari's performance figures.

Ferrari says the car will go from zero to 62 mph in less than three seconds, zero to 124 mph in less than seven seconds, and zero to 186 mph in 15 seconds. Its top speed will be faster than 217 mph.

In addition to this straight-line speed, Ferrari also says the LaFerrari lapped its Fiorano testing track in 1 minute, 20 seconds. That's five seconds faster than the Enzo supercar the LaFerrari replaces, and three seconds faster than the company's F12Berlinetta.

Ferrari said it will make just 499 copies of the LaFerrari. The automaker didn't disclose pricing at Geneva, but don't expect it to be any cheaper than its close competitor, the McLaren P1. That 903-horsepower supercar -- also a hybrid -- debuted at Geneva with a price tag of $1.15 million.

Given the speed and specifications of the LaFerrari, it's inevitable that the car will long be compared with the P1. That the battle for supremacy between these two titans of F1 motorsport would spill into their road cars is collateral damage everyone benefits from. No matter what you name the cars.

I have to agree. "LaFerrari" is a work of art, the more I see of it, the more I like it.

I have the exact opposite feeling about that Lambo, the first pic was pretty crazy, with the $4mil price tag underneath it. But every pic I've seen since, has not impressed. It just looks like someone is trying too hard.

On the other hand... The Ferrari looks like it was born, in Heaven or Hell (your pick).

Actually the V12 is making 789hp and the rest is from the battery pack. Thats very impressive, a tick over 125hp per liter.

What is it with names these days? Chevy makes a car named "SS"... Ferrari names what could be their baddest ass automobile ever, "LaFerrari"... and just about every other automaker is using Alpha-Numeric names. Are we running out of names... running out of creativity?
Honda has used the name, "Passport" on different vehicles (a scooter AND an SUV), and Pontiac resurrected "LeMans" for a car NOTHING like the "real" one. Malibus should have had a new name, as there seems to be little in common with the early incarnation. Novas, too... how was that LAST lil' Nova even remotely similar to its predecessors? Even American trucks: F150, Chevy/GMC 1500/ Ram 1500... or F250, Chevy/ GMS 2500/ Ram 2500... and so forth. Toyota had a remotely feasible "pattern" going, when they were simultaneously selling the "T-100," the "Tundra," (see how it sorta sounds like "T-hundred?"), and the Tacoma ("C" represents "100" in Roman Numerals, so you get a "T" followed shortly my a form of "100"). Or, Citation? Shouldn't that name have been pinned on a really fast car? But the Chevy Spark... doesn't that sound like a name for an ELECTRIC vehicle?

Of course... lots of names have no meaning, but really seem to work: Camry, Sentra, Corvette, and Camaro come to mind.

Terrible name, it looks like a Pagani rip off, it's just an answer to the question Mclaren never asked.

LaFerrari Already Racks Up More Than A Thousand Requests
Quote:
Ferrari has confirmed its new LaFerrari flagship supercar has already racked up more than a thousand requests, despite its asking price being well over a million dollars (the final figure is yet to be announced).

Unfortunately, Ferrari has chosen to limit production to just 499 examples, which means there will be a lot of disappointed millionaires out there.

This means anyone lucky enough to have secured a build slot can look forward to their cars appreciating in value--before they have even been built.

Ferrari’s flagship supercars typically hold their value over time, and in many cases they rise dramatically as car fans and even investors bid up their prices.

Recently in the Financial Times, a number of assets were analyzed to see which gave the best growth over the last 10 years. The best performing assets turned out to be gold and classic cars of significant importance, with the latter offering a return of 395 percent.

With attributes such as this, it’s little surprise that Ferrari’s ‘special series’ cars are regularly sold out before they’re even announced. Unfortunately, just having the money to buy one is no guarantee that you’ll be offered the opportunity.

Ferrari invites only its most loyal customers to place an order. Getting on this list is no easy task as it usually means having already bought several of Ferrari’s cars, and importantly, still owning some of them.

For the budding collectors out there, cars with global appeal and documented histories general do well, especially if they were built in limited quantities--something the LaFerrari meets in most regards.

Code named the F150, the LaFerrari made its debut on Tuesday at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It is powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a V-12 engine with Ferrari’s own HY-KERS hybrid setup designed to boost output and lower emissions. Peak output is 950 horsepower and “more than” 660 pound-feet of torque, which will ensure the car reaches 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds, 186 mph in 15 seconds and a top speed above 217 mph.

Ferrari LaFerrari Color Configurator Powers Up
Quote:
There's no question that the Ferrari LaFerrari was the belle of the ball at the Geneva Motor Show with fans salivating all over the world over the new Italian supercar. Now those fans can see what the LaFerrari looks like in colors other than red with the new online color configurator.
While the online color configurator currently only shows the car in yellow, black, or red, Ferrari has already said a customer can order the new LaFerrari in any color they want. In fact, the LaFerrari can even be ordered in a two-tone paint scheme.

If you are lucky enough to be ordering a LaFerrari, it seems the color will be the only thing you'll be choosing, as it's the only available option. The car is what it is, and there are no available options--though we're sure Ferrari will tweak one of these hyper-expensive hypercars to suit any buyer's taste, for an additional fee.

The limited options list doesn't seem to be concerning buyers as Ferrari has stated it already has over a thousand requests for the new supercar. Unfortunately the Italian automaker only plans on producing 499 examples, so there are going to be quite a few hundred disappointed millionaires.

For those with short memories, the LaFerrari features a hybrid drivetrain with a V-12 engine and Ferrari's HY-KERS hybrid system. The combined output of this setup is 950 horsepower and "more than" 660 pound-feet of torque.
