Note that the more sporty and agile, the more driven to pure performance, the more difficulty they'll have bearing a family in the long run. They can still do it, but not without a lot of struggle, and you may find the need to change your expectations for something more family-friendly.

It can then be easy to let your eyes wander to the idea of the "project", the one you don't have to drive daily and can spend as much time as you need to get exactly the way you want. But the problem is that the attention you pay is completely different, and your daily can get jealous and fall into disrepair while you ignore it and lavish your intimate attention on the project.

If you do get a good family-friendly model, you'll find it very hard to go back, and you will find your perceptions changed considerably. Sure, you can do some mods and bring some spice, but if they've got a lot of extra weight that's not being dealt with then it's mostly just for show, and you find that that's not as bad a deal as what you thought when you were younger. The utility and dependability, and not to mention plain old comfort, are hard to sacrifice...and you find yourself wondering what really matters after all.

This then results in the midlife crisis, where you think that picking up a new model will help validate that you've still got the skills that got you your first passion. The excitement of the chase is there, but it's short-lived and ill-satisfying. You find yourself wishing to go back to the way things were, but your pride gets in the way telling you that being content isn't enough, or that contentedness itself is a flawed goal.

So you dump the new model and fix things up with the daily, the one that has served you and your family well and with whom you've had many great adventures, and you start paying more attention to details. Cleaning up the interior, paying special attention to her so that she shines, and buying small gifts to help remind her you care. She may not be anything to anyone else, but she's everything to you.

She becomes the project, and with the new found attention all the sudden a second wind comes on and the experiences and adventures are afresh. Maybe there are some struggles, some heavy pains and big bills as parts get old and need to be replaced or removed. You may even find her corroding away from a lifetime of bad habits, and while you can help patch things up, it's only delaying the inevitable.

Then, one day, there's an accident, and it wasn't either of your faults. You're injured and alive, but she's not going to make it. Tearfully you have to let her go on to the next life, while you pick up the pieces of your own and try to find out how to move on. There are more out there that can fill her role, but you won't love them the same way, and the only thing helping hold off the pain is the fond memories shared, and the realization of how lucky you were to have had her in the first place.

Sure, it's easy to be lured by the thoughts of leasing your heart out without a commitment, to not feel the pain of loss after investing so much, or to keep test driving until you find something that meets all your criteria. Time and again, though, we see that investing wisely into just one is worth much more than many give credit, and that the lifelong search for perfection only leaves you bitter and lonely. So long as you're as committed to them as they you, you can get through any of the major bumps on the road, and come out better in the end for it.

And if you're lucky enough to find a good match and can work together to bring new life into the world...well...that's a road trip for another day.
