Well....not getting my deposit back :( $500 gone!

About 4 weeks ago we put a deposit down and ordered a camaro, a few weeks later we found one at another dealership and bought it on the spot.

Just called the original dealership to cancel our order, they got really crappy with my wife, and won't give us the $500 deposit back. I kind of expected it, but it still pisses me off. It's not like they won't sell it, and they're trying to make me feel like they did me a favor by ordering it for us???

This same dealership wouldn't let us test drive the car until we filled out an app and the owner of the dealership came out to check out what kind of car we were driving and what we looked like. I understand EVERYONE wants to test drive this car...but really??

i think they have to give you the deposit back after the car is sold...thats what i was told by my dealer

This is WHY you always get it in writing. I had money at 3 dealers and go all of my deposits back.

I'd get that 500.00 in a voucher. They gotta make good on it in some way. you may be able to help somone in some way if you know anyone who buys from them.

Well the guy was a complete arse to my wife. I really shouldn't have ordered from him anyhow, he was doing all the typical strong arm stuff to try to get us to buy and I was completely uncomfortable from the get go.

But if anyone wants a non t-top, yellow 2LT RS, I know where one will be in a few weeks. Maybe then I'd get my money back.

I didn't even have to deposit down when i ordered or anything much less fill out anything just to test drive it.. The owner of the dealership just tossed me(17 year old) the keys.. But then again he's a friend of a friend.. But even at one of the dealerships i didn't have a connection at he just gave me the key (my dad rode along though) but he said if i did choose to order there he needed the $500 (refundable) depo..

I had to put down a 1000 dollar deposit when I ordered mine. The dealer made sure I understood that the deposit was non-refundable. Sometimes when you make a deal you are stuck. To add insult to injury, it is unfortunate that he was an a** to your wife. That would get me fired up as well.

I put my deposit down in April of 07. It clearly stated that there was no cash refund of the deposit. However if I changed my mind the $1000 could be applied to another GM car or truck. Been dealing with that Dealership since the 50's as a family. I knew the rules of the road before I put the money down. Sometimes you pay your money and take your chances.

I didn't expect to get my deposit back, but he was nasty to my wife. That's what makes me upset. Thanks for letting me vent guys.

This must vary by state depending on the law. In CA, I inquired at several dealers about ordering before I found mine on a lot. All of them said the same thing, that they don't take any cash deposits because legally they have to refund them anyways if the buyer backs out, so what is the point?

I'm curious if you had a written agreement with your deposit. Also, in states where deposits are required, what would prevent the buyer from refusing the car when it arrived based on "condition"? I'm sure you could find a flaw on every new Camaro.

They don't have to refund your money, but they should do that after selling the car. The reason they most likely will not is that they understand that it will cost you more than that in litigation fees.

I do not like to speak ill of other dealers, but my advice would be cut your losses, and forever pay them back by telling everyone you know not to deal w/ them.
