Repairing Scratches on the dash

I have a small, flat gouge on the edge of the dash done when I installed my painted speedo bezel. I'm going to try to cut the smeared part with a razor blade, but there's still some discoloration! I even put a towel between the bezel and dash so this wouldn't happen :(. Has anyone successfully repaired a small scratch or gouge on the dash? I'll get my wife to help me post a pic if her camera will work.

Once you've scuffed/cut the plastic and there is a noticeable gouge, it will never be perfectly flawless again. Have you tried buffing it out? You could try a small dremal tool with a soft buffer wheel connected. If you dont have a buffing tool, you could use a tiny bit of polish and buff with a soft shirt. Beater shirts (undershirts) work great for stuff like this.

Another thing you could do, this sounds silly but you could paint the area with matching dash paint and use a textured roller to smooth the paint surface. That would give you that dash look (rough plasticy look). nIf you do attempt to paint touch up, make sure its flat/matte and not glossy. EDIT: I'm not 100% sure even which paint would be a closest match, hopefully another Camaro5 member can chime in.

EDIT2: If you can, get a photo of the scratch so we can see what were dealing with.

Thank you DJ ATOMIX. I like the idea of a dab of touch up paint. I still don't know how it happened.

I had a (scratch ) in a more inconspicuous spot. I used a black sharpie marker. Let sit a second or two then rubbed it in with my finger. It seemed to work

My stereo was stolen out of my car about 10 years ago. The thieves must have used a screwdriver between the dash and the units to lever it out. It left a HUGE splice in the dash on each side. I expected them to replace the dash but they repaired it. The dealer told me that a specialist comes in to do it. They heat up the soft plastic, suck the dent out and let the plastic melt back together while using a graining tool. I couldn't believe how perfect the repair was. Nobody would ever notice... not even me and I know exactly when it was. Maybe you could search around for someone that does this kind of repair.

I was just at a body shop the other day, the latest and greatest technology now involves one snapping a photo of the material needing repair. The computer reads the photo in a specific are then selects the paint or dye in this case needed to match the panel then spits out a perfectly match mixed stick of dye... soooo freakn cool! They simply apply the dye then buff out using a high speed polisher wheel.

They fixed my damaged seat this way last week as well, soo impressed!! The computer mixes the dye perfectly!

Sorry for bumping up an older thread but I have some results to share with you.

So knock on wood but I got my first interior scratch in the plastic last week and my heart was racing from seeing it. So I began researching how to guides on the net and from all the differant ways of repairing, it seems the easiest and cheapest always comes back to the black sharpie.

So I went ahead and used the black sharpie the way they explained it to me. You need to use your thumbs and press and rub in one direction very hard. I ended up with calices from doing this but it worked!

You need to blend with the sharpie putting marker not only on the damaged spot but outside of the damaged area as well.

If the gouge is super deep, use gorilla glue to fill the gouge then use a credit card or card to flatten the glue over the gouge then sharpie over it and countinue to blend using your thumb and rotate to fingers when your thumb is sore.

Make sure there is no moisture around to remove the sharpie ink.

After the first attempt, let it dry for a day and then come back again and do it all over again. Eventually, you should use car wax on the door area or dash area to help promote blending the area. In my case where I scratched the door, I lightly clean and waxed the whole door panel.

Do not use polish as this plastic has a true matte finish and we dont want your scratch shinny.

Another thing, if you use the gorilla glue (I dont like super glue as it drys to fast!), you'll have to resharpie that area like six or seven times and use your thumbs to kill the glossy look.

After a third attempt, the scratch on my door is 95% gone with only a bit of dirt like texture remaining.

one last thing, by reapplying the sharpie many times and blending with your thumb, that texture effect begins to come back (little bumps throughout the dash look).

Awesome . I never did do anything with the scratch and it seems minor now, but your write up will help others.
