Help!

Ok so I have spent the last few days installing a new pair of headers on my 2010 SS. After three days of work I finally started the car this evening. After running for a few seconds the car began to lose rpms and began to slow. I did this twice, the second time I checked the spark plug wires to make sure they were well connected. Any suggestions of what I might try next?

Did you remove the spark plugs for the install? Most issues seem to be cracked spark plugs, if they weren't removed.

No, I did not remove them. Did not realize they were that delicate. Any suggestion on a replacement brand? I see E3 advertised a lot but Ive heard mixed reviews about them.

Use stock plugs. No real benefit in changing them given your config.

Stock plugs for sure unless you're boosted or running nitrous.

E3's are junk.

Ok, so I got the plugs all changed. The rpm's are holding steady but what rpm should I be at? I think its hovering around 6 or 7 hundred. That seems really low. Is that right?

That rpm actually seems high for a stock tune. Should be around 550-600.

Oh alright. This is my first time doing headers or messing with the exhaust at all so I had no idea what to expect. Thanks though

If you're not tuned, it may take a little bit for the PCM to adjust to the headers. No worries though. Does the car drive ok now?

I took it out for a little spin earlier tonight. Got on it a bit and it seems to be working just fine. Rechecked the rpm's and they're sitting right at 600. I was under the impression that I wouldn't need a tune for these. Seems like a waste to pay for a tune now when more upgrades will be coming.

If they are long tube headers, you will need a tune to attain the maximum performance from the headers. You will also need a tune to turn off the CEL which will sooner or later come on. It shouldn't cause any damage to drive around without getting a tune, but if you have a CEL from the O2 sensors and you do nothing, if you throw another code due to some other issue, you will not know it.

You will definitely need a tune. I had a dyno chart from before I added my headers. When I went in to finally get my tune I was quite surprised. I lost about 20rwtq and my AFR was extremely rich. It would stumble on start up like you are probably seeing. Bottom line, get a tune.

I have shorty headers not LT's so does that make a difference regarding needing a tune? Just trying to make sure Im not wasting money by getting a tune that won't do much in the long run. Especially because I may switch too LT's eventually. I only bought the shorties because I got a great deal on a pair of used ones from my friend.
