Great thread...I too purchased the extended warranty package, and was feeling like I might have gotten talked into something I didn't need..BUT after reading these posts, I feel MUCH better about it, as she is my daily driver AND I plan on keeping her WAY past the extended warranty period...

Our dealer tried to talk us into etching a code into different parts of the car so we can track it if it's ever stolen and parted out. The guy then looked baffled when I told him that if it was stolen, that the insurance would replace it and I wouldn't care about what pieces were found.

What a great dealer profit maker....All the cars parts have the vin on them (except the glass). My repsonse would be, I have OnStar, and they can find my car if its stolen.....and glass etching ruins collectability.

Most cars (and their owners) have their problems, if there are any, before the 36/36 warranty is up. The stealership extended warranties are a rip off from the get go. Drive more, worry less.... until you get to the 36/36 point. Then pay the bucks if your worried!

Got the extended Mastergard

I have a 2004 Envoy, and though it has been the most reliable, defect free GM car I have ever owned, it did have a couple of things happen and the extended warranty has payed for itself. I do suggest that if you get it, get as low of deductible as you can afford. If you have $200 deductible sometimes the thing you have repaired costs less than the deductible.
A friend of mine had some minor problem, and had a $200 deductible. Thanks to an honest service writer he paid $125 for the repair rather than $200 deductible.
I have a 99 B5 VW Passat. As that was the first year of production, they gave you an almost bumper to bumper, 10 year , 100K miles warranty. That's the good news. Boy did I use that warranty. That's the bad news. I'm getting ready to sell it and was looking thru service records and saw that I had had oil leaks repaired 16 times. Plus a whole look of other stuff. Ouch. I wouldn't have kept the car without that warranty.

You can cancel it, but you won't get the cash back now. They just drop it off the end of loan and you will have a few extra months dropped off at the end of your loan. Trust me, I did the same thing. The only way I got the money back was to refinance the loan and get the cash back.

The only vehicle I ever had an extended warranty on(G.E notGM) was my 94 s-10 and used it one time when the heater core leaked the repair was less than the cost of the warranty. Nothing elese went wrong until the warranty was long expired. I never bought another extened warranty on another vehicle after that.

In Sept 2009 when I picked up the Camaro 1SS from the dealer, they offered a $500 rebate or 2 year extended GM warranty (goes to 5yrs/60000 miles), which is transferrable for $50 fee. Since I keep my cars (95 Z28, then 2002 Z28, now 2010 SS) seemed worth the money. Had head gasket trouble on the 2002 and the warranty helped a bunch.

Extended warranties are a scam.

Warrantees, and protection plans..

I got the 6yr/60,000 mile GM major guard warranty. So what do I get compared to my factory 3yr/3600 and 5yr/100,000. Hmm.. 3 more years of "kind of" bumper to bumper, and one more year of "kind of" drive train if I stay below 60,000 which I will since it's my toy, but can I keep it stock for 6 years, or will I even keep it for 6 years, not sure. I got ALL the protection plans for my car (GM, tire protection, paint) because I wanted the car to last forever, but I have mixed feelings about them now since they added about $2000 to the price of my car. The tire plan is good, the paint plan is a waste unless you live near seagulls, and the GM plan I don't know yet.

Only difference from the 36k mile/3 year bumper to bumper warranty is that there is a $100 per claim deductible.

I'm happy with my decision.
I DID THE SAME BUT MINE WAS 6YR /60000?
