would the Z28 beat the ZL1 in performance?

So thinking hypothetically... if they did release the Z28 in another 2 years or so ... do you think it would be even more powerful (perhaps the LS7 engine) than the ZL1 and cost more... or would it directly rival the mustang boss 302 and be cheaper than the ZL1?

Doubtful since the LS7 is not more powerful than the LSA, and I do not see them using a forced induction motor on the Z28.

That's a tough one. If Z28 were to come with LS7 and near 500 HP, MRC, good tires, and a low rent interior, I think it would. Without it being lighter and having the MRC and brakes, I don't think it's possible. I agree, though, that it's competition for the Boss and you don't compare a race car to a street car.

Around a track I'd say yes.

In a drag race, probably not.

If it comes with the LS7 @505HP. Thats only about 50HP less than what the ZL1 is rumored to have. And it is a lighter car. Then it would probably smoke the ZL1.

LS7 is too expensive, I say:

1. 500+hp Gen V V8
2. ZL1 Suspension upgrades (MRC, Wheel/Tire combo, Suspension upgrades etc..)
3. Carbon Ceramic brakes from the ZR1 (Would cut 45lbs of unsprung wieght)
4. Light wieght sparco or Recaro racing seats (Cuts 40lbs of wieght)
5. Carbon Fiber roof (Cuts 35lbs maybe)
6. Smooth under body (Less Drag)

Since Its N.A. it will be a little lighter on the nose than the ZL1 and wieght Distrib should be 50/50.

Cost would be almost the same as the ZL1 (50k-ish) even with the Carbon ceramic brakes since I am Assuming that the Gen V v8 won't cost that much more than the 6.5k LS3 which is $8.5k cheaper than the LS7 or LSA. So that should be enough room for those price brakes at a 50k-ish price point.

A lot depends if debuts with the current platform or the new alpha platform. A 475 HP LS3 NA engine in the current platform, probably not. A 475 HP DI in a 300 pound lighter Alpha chassis, that would be totally different. I still foresee the ZL1 coming in around 575 HP and with all of the other technology in this car, it will be a very strong competitor for any car.

We will never see a 475HP out of a factory LS3

That also being said odds of the LS7 in a 5th gen Camaro are slim since the LS7 is built by hand. I even place money on the fact that we will not see a Gen V v8 in a Camaro until 2014, although this is the motor i think a majority of Z28 fans want.

Now if they didnt make the LS7 by hand i think it would be the engine it would get until the new alpha platform is used.

We need some info on the z28. Anything, production date, performance package, something.

My preference is for the best CAMARO car for the track, without price being a major factor. I just do not know whether to buy the zl1 or wait a few months/year for the z28.

if you dont care about price, why not get teh ZL-1 and do all major suspension upgrades? ... the only thing the z28 would be better than the zl1 in is handling/suspension most likely

and good luck waiting on z28 info... GM has never even officially said they would make it... its 100% on the hush hush

The Z28 will probably be as different from the ZL1 as the Boss is to the GT500.

I'll wait until the fourth quarter right before my official order goes in for the zl1 and hopefully by then there will be news on the z28. I want to do some weekend racing on the track with something very track friendly, fast and nimble. I'm not into drag racing and that is what the old zl1 was primarily for.

If the z28 comes out three years from now then I would get a 2012 v6 and that would be light, fast, and even cheap. It would've good practice for the z28.

There is an engine on GMPP called the LS376/480...it has 480hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. Its just a hot cam LS3. That's kind of power it will need to overcome the weight disadvantage to the Boss 302.

All we want is a Z/28 that is faster than the Boss 302 without using forced induction, lighter than SS without using expensive materials, handles better than the Boss without using magnetic shocks and all that for around $40,000. I mean, how hard could it be?

No doubt, the designers and engineers have their work cut out for them.

If the Z/28 comes out as a 5th Generation, which I think it should, it will most likely not be an LS7 powered car that weighs 3500 lbs. The odds are that it will weigh between the V6 and V8 at around 3750. That's not too bad really.

There's no current engine in production that would be a clearly perfect fit for the car.

Scenario one is that the C7 Corvette goes to the next generation engine and the Z/28 gets the LS7 that is left behind.

Scenario two is that the Z/28 gets an enhacned LS3 such as the hotcam engine. I just can't see a new generation 4 engine (LS8?) being produced just for the Z/28, especially with the Gen5 so close at hand.

Scenario three, which actually makes a lot of sense from a production perspective is that the Z/28 is the first Camaro to get the new Gen 5 engine the year after the brand new corvette, so we're looking at 2013/2014 model year for a one or two year run for the Z/28 before the 6th generation camaro is rumored to debut. And if the engine is a 5.5 liter race-bred V8 as it has been rumored, then it is the perfect engine for this car, and I see it being about 450 to 460 hp in this application.
