Headers w/Stock Exhaust
Thinking awful hard about doing headers with high flow cats on my Camaro (LS3 Car).
I do not hate the sound of the exhaust now, i rather prefer the "sleeper" status so every ricer leaves me alone. I have been told the dynatech cat back exhaust is very quiet also, what are the gains from switching it out vs. the factory? Is it worth the $$$ to go aftermarket knowing this? The setup I was considering is: Headers (probably dynatech) with high flow cats & a set of noweeds exhaust cutouts. Suggestions? Does anybody have a clip of a similar setup? Thanks BS Also, this setup with a CAI will require tuning. Suggestions? Montana does not have much for performance shops for a dyno tune.

There is not much performance benefit to a cat back on these cars until you get into BIG HP numbers. It is mostly going to be about sound and weight reduction. You can have the tuning done remotely.

If you want to keep it quiet, keep the factory exhaust. It'll be a quiet idle and cruise but loud when you get on it. The factory mufflers look big and restrictive but its not the case.

I have the magnaflow comp series exhaust with SW headers and its pretty quiet for me. No drone inside and barely hear it unless it WOT. People always compliment me in the sound.

I think that LT headers and the stock exhaust is one of best sounding setups. I had this at one time, but I blew a baffle in one of the stock exhausts (caused by the LTs?), and had to go aftermarket.

You will gain the most power with a full exhaust system. But, for the "sleeper" sound this setup would gain you some good hp and keep it quiet. Check out a Kooks Header vendor on this site for some great deals on our headers.

LTs and stock exhaust is not quiet at all. Do a search. It sounds awesome, and it cuts down on the drone that you get with most aftermarket mufflers.

Like others have already said, you won't gain anything by swapping out the catback. Toss in a set of cut outs to wake things up if you're ever in the mood. If this sounds like something you're serious about I'd also recommend the ARH "long system". The long system runs all the way to the rear axles and will remove the factory H-pipe (with an X-pipe) and the resonators. If you do add headers then you should get a tune although you really won't be harming anything by waiting a bit, you just leave a good amount of power on the table. |

Well, I plan to do the cat back at sometime.
Just trying to budget by build. I dont finance toys so... Just dont want the car to sound like crap during the process. Headers 1 7/8 or 2' primaries/Noweed's and probably a CAI are probably what I am initially looking at. Eventually I will do some suspension upgrades, cat back and possibly a maggie. So I prefer my parts to work later in my build vs. having to replace them once I add forced induction. Thanks BS

You would love a set of cutouts. Cutouts, LTs, and a cam sounds like a demon.

Why not just remove the mufflers and run catless with LTs? Why do it part-time with cutouts? BORING! :P
Also, cutouts are added cost, added work, and one more thing to fail on the car. |
