OTOH, it's much easier to improve a manual's fuel economy, because you control gear, speed, and throttle separately. That programming that goes into the auto, you can do the same stuff, and you can do more.
For EPA ratings, and for drivers who aren't really paying attention or wouldn't bother trying, the auto will provide equal or better fuel economy.
