MyLink + OnStar
Does MyLink need OnStar to work? What happens if I remove the OnStar module? Is MyLink broken/useless?
What about the touch radio? Will that still work without the OnStar module? |

My Link requires an active Onstar subscription to work. If you remove the module or stop paying it will no longer function.
As for the radio, I don't think it needs Onstar. |

Even if you rip out the module? I know right now if you rip out the onstar module than bluetooth with your phone will stop working. What about if I rip it out with the 7" touch radio? Will the touch radio become useless or will my XM/regular radio work as well as other features not related to mylink?

Why does Mylink require Onstar? Its only a Bluetooth connection point for your car... I thought all of the programs like Pandora and Stitch went through your smartphone to work.. Even the optional navigation system uses a GPS antenna and does not go through Onstar.. According to the information on Mylink it displays some Onstar information but doesn't require Onstar to function.

not surprised it requires onstar...
onstar is basically a cell data plan built into your car. They COULD make pandora work through your phone. but I bet they wont.. they can't force you to buy something that way.. edit: "mylink" is GM's answer to the microsoft system in fords. Wahts it called? blue-oval of death? somethin like that.. |

I expect that I will not be researching, or attempting to add this EXCUSE for a product to my car next year.
I expect that it won't sell well either.. when 99.99999% of all over GPS services are near or totally free.. then this ONE comes along and thinks its so superior that it requires a fee when no one else's does? let me ask you if you're in a city like charleston and 5 kids are making those little roses they give out.. and 4 of those 5 are free and then one comes along.. forces one in your face thats inferior quality to the others and says "only $10 a month!" which are you going to get?? (considering you want one..) |

that's what draco is saying..
if he's not wrong I'm not even considering this product any more. It's flat out insulting that they would do it this way.. hell my sierra doesn't even require onstar for navigation.. the only reason it isn't a factory nav deck now is because it doesn't have the bose system required for it.. |

Something else to keep in mine about these "free" nav systems, you have to update their maps and you're suppose to update them every year. The updates I've seen typically run $75-$100 for a full update.
