Z28 whats the big deal?
So im kinda new to the chevy thing i have always been into imports so im still learning stuff. I was wondering if someone could clarify or tell me the big deal behind the Z28 i have always thought the z28 model was not as good as the SS i thought SS was the top of the line in camaro models.

Consider can of worms open.....
I will give ya the basics because someone is going to come in and let you know in depth. SS is the top dog ( think drag car)...Z/28 is more road course inspired. |

Personally, I don't think there will ever be a Z28 trim level. Z28 will be badging for a special appearance and/or handling package. Someday in the more distant future they may make a Z28 trim with a low-displacement, high-output, DI engine, but I think CAFE is gonna force all the engines to head that direction so I think this is unlikely. SS always has been the big bruiser in the Chevy line up. Making the Z28 a more powerful car would just open up a different can of worms from us malcontents who think SS should keep its top-dog status.

Z28 was originally a street legal race car, the SS package was originally an appearance deal and was later associated with huge power. Depending on what an individual considers racing, they will give you a different answer on what was better. SS's made for better drag cars but a Z28 would be better on a road course. Currently, General Motors considers the Z28 to be superior to Super Sport.

Honestly I don't feel this question quite merits a facepalm, TJT.
It took me a while to catch on to why the Z/28 and its heritage were such a big deal to Camaro enthusiasts. I have always been a fan of classic American muscle, but never been a Camaro enthusiast. If you gave me a wad of cash and a time machine, I would roll back with a '69 Chevelle Yenko and a '68 GTO ragtop. Camaro just happens to be the best muscle for my money today.

Z28 is simply the RPO designation that came up when the option package was originated.
People have loved different iterations, therefore the warmth for Z28.

I was taking a step back and looking at the history of the badge ... I suppose I should have been a bit clearer. Either way, yes the SS Camaro's were the ones with the big honkin' engines while the Z28's had those impressive little 302's.

You beat me to the punch, I was going to add the Z28 was inspired by the Trans-AM racing series and born from that aspect so it carries a very big stick or weight with the Camaro community. Much like Shelby does with Ford. The Z28 is and in my mind will always be the true racing Camaro that we all in the family desire.

Overall, I won't talk for all the Z28 guys outthere, but personnally, when I say "I want a Z28" I just mean "I want a GT500 killer with 550 hp whatever its name". SS being the historical top dog? Ok, but that "top dog" seems way too "low" for me
