I was told that with modern engines and synthetic oil, you can get away with changing the oil every 10k miles.

Its funny how everyone has their own opinions.

I have mine changed every 5000 mile with Mobil one. I do not trust the OLM.

Change that oil everytime you go fill her with gas over >8 gallons, and by the way, only premium gas, min 93 octane of ethanol FREE gas.

Anything less, may as well just part it out as junk.

I have always thought that your first oil change on a new vehicle should be within the first 2K miles. Not because of a breakdown in the oil but because of the possible particulates from the brand new engine. I replaced mine within 1500 miles and again at 3500 miles during break in. I have like 13K miles and I've had the car since June 2009 and had the oil changed 5 times. From here I will probably go on a 5K mile routine.

I don't think changing the oil twice within 3500 miles is necessary, but it sure didn't hurt anything. I just wish the oil changes were $25 instead of $125.

Is there really a reason to change the oil within the first couple thousand miles when new?

I go for 5000 intervals, full synthetic.

Changed oil for the first time at 500 miles, wish I hadn't I have all this really nice slightly used oil in a container now. I seriously consider use in my lawn mower or something. The filter was another story though, the contents of the oil filter make me anxious to see inside the next one.

I changed mine at 2k and I've been following the OLM ever since. I figure that's what GM put it there for and they're one's that have to honor the 100k powertrain warranty. I sold a 1999 Grand Am last year w/212k on it. I always changed the oil on it when the light came on. It sometimes went 15k before the light came on and I didn't even use synthetic. It never burned oil and I never had any problems with it. I still see it on the road almost every day. Changing your oil at anything less than 5k is a complete waste. I went to a 5k schedule back in the 80's. I put over 200k on a 4.3 S-10 with no problems, and I even put 170k on a Vega with no problems and no oil burning, all on a 5k schedule. This whole 3k oil change thing was started by the quick lube places, to drive up profits.

I removed the factory oil at 100miles, put in high grade conventional oil and ran that for 500miles, then put Mobile 1 back in and change every spring (I only drive the car about 2000miles a year as its a second car) Car runs super strong and no issues.

And I change it myself. So that keeps the cost down to the oil and filter.

Changed the first time @ 10969 and the second @ 21186. The OLM still showed several thousand miles left but changed because of the 12 month interval to keep warranty in force.

Dealer staff recommends 5K mile interval. I figure its a ploy for the dealer to make extra $'s. But that is just my opinion.
