TTL, Warranty, and Fees question

Ok...I've never bought a new car before so I'll be new to the process. I'm hoping to order a car in a few months. In the mean time I'm trying to come up with my budget and how much I'll need to save up to get the payments where I am comfortable with them.

So, I configured what I want on Chevy's site (simply ABM or VR 2SS w/polished wheels) and it came out to basically $34,700. I know I'll have to pay Taxes (6.25% in TX) , Title (don't remember but i think it was less than $100), and License (again I think less than $100) but what about destination fees that I've heard of. I thought I saw somewhere that was $800. Any other fees or anything I'll need to account for?

Also, warranty....5 yrs on the drivetrain I know but what is the rest of the car's warranty? Is it 5 yrs as well? About how much do the extended warranties cost and how long can you get them for?

Destination fee is $795, and you're correct that vehicle sales tax in TX is 6.25%. Forum member RedRaider also linked this http://www.carmax.com/enUS/tax-title...r/default.html in a similar post a couple of weeks ago. I found it to be pretty helpful. It'll give you a pretty good estimate.

Be glad you don't live in NY...our sales tax rate is 8.75%...
I had to pay almost $3000 just for the sales tax!!!...I picked my car up in Virginia, and their sales tax is only 3%...too bad I couldn't pay tax there, but the tax gets paid to the state the car is registered in...:(

6.25% Texas STSTE taxes, if your dealer is inside the city limits, you will be paying the city taxes as well, most likely about another 2%, either way, with a price tag of about $34,500 your bottom line will end up in the ballpark of about $38,250

When I bought my truck in 2007 it was from a dealership inside the city limits, and the sales tax rate was 6.25%. I expected it to be 8.25%, like sales tax is on other goods, but the finance manager explained vehicles fell under a different tax rate.

Local issue, maybe?

Thanks for the link....that definatley helps. Glad to hear the destination fee is included in the prices on the chevy site.

So, the link is coming up with about $2,300 in additional fees and I'm hoping to get about $3,200 for a trade-in. That should give me a little extra towards the actual purchase of the car plus I think they deduct the trade-in value from MSRP and then do taxes based on that amount.

could be, and that is GOOD news! and if that is the way it goes, that bottom line will be about $680 cheaper.

We're financing at our credit union & the loan officer told us it would be 6.25% plus about $150 for "dealer fees" as he put it (Title, License).

Yes, you pay taxes on the final amount after your trade-in is deducted. So I was told.

Believe the powertrain warranty is now 10 years or 50,000 miles. The bumper to bumper warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles.
