Disable DRL

I have a non-RS, I just installed HID Projectors so I don't want my HID's running during the day..plus they flicker anyway lol because of the low voltage output....I connected a relay as shown which disables my DRL function....ive seen people use diodes in certain wiring configurations...would I need one for something like this?? ive never really understood when and where to use a diode. Thanks

The diode is to prevent feedback from when the relay closes. When the power is turned off to coil (what moves the switch in the relay) the energy stored in the coil has to go somewhere. The diode will allow it to safely drain the coil without going back to the power source.

This is from what I can remember, might be wrong on a few details.

MagnumForceGB hit on one aspect of diode use. The more common one is for when you change lamp functions and need to keep power from back-feeding the BCM. You are not doing this with your setup.

In your case, just a diode across the coil (85 and 86) with the cathode (stripe) towards the positive side... Unless your relays already have diodes.

ok sooo I would crimp the diode along with the wire inside the same connector?? and do the same on the other end with the other wire connector??

If you can do that and still get a good crimp, sure.

Thanks sjmautoprod....do you have a particular part number I could use...like from radio shack

probably be easier to just get a relay with a suppression diode built in than to cut your harness and solder in a diode., relays are cheap.
the larger ISO relays have diagrams on the case showing if a diode is present.
but you have to make sure 85 and 86 are wired correctly, diodes are polarity sensitive and having pos and neg backwards will fry the diode.

the other suppression choice is a relay with a resistor built in.
plug and play, they are not polarity sensitive and I prefer them for auto use.

Interesting that you bring up the ones with resistors. That makes no sense to me as that is usually done in AC circuits, not DC.

may have started in ac circuits but they are pretty common for auto use too.
I just looked in my relay stash in my garage and at least a couple of resistor relays are OEM Ford and Freightliner.

Interesting. Looks like a "good enough" solution as an alternate to diodes.

Thanks for the info....here is a picture of one of my relays...does the line through the box mean this is a diode relay?...or what would the symbol look like. Thanks

The box with the line through it is the relay coil. It does not show a diode or a resistor.

ok...what would be the best place to buy one...I assuming radio shack doesn't carry them

They should. Any small-signal diode would work, like the 276-1122.
