Question I needed a new catalytic converter...? (v6)

Few weeks ago my car would barely start and i barely made it to the dealership. I had 5 CELS!

So in the end, the dealership fixed it under warranty by replacing the catalytic converter. I have been on this forum for a while now and I read a lot. I have never heard of anybody having this problem with under 35k miles...What could have caused this?

Also, now the idle is sort of, hmmmm, well its sounds like I have a really mild cam. I am sure it didnt sound like this before. Does the catalytic converter need time to break in or something? I have no idea.

Thanks guys!

Check your tune. Sometimes if your running rich it can mess up your cats and cause misfires which would describe the sound your hearing.

Catalytics dont commit suicide they are murdered. Its a saying we have in the shop. The only time a Cat will go bad is because something caused it. And unless the tech fixed the issue that caused the cat to go bad, the car will end up back in there for another new cat. If you feel the car is not running the way it should, take it back in.

I have been told burning excessive oil will destroy a catalytic converter. Are you burning oil?

A bad O2 will kill a cat.

Cats don't need a break in, take it back if not running smooth.

Cats? Who has those these days?

Glad to hear it all got worked out. I've never heard any other Camaro owners with that issue yet.

That's great to hear that your dealership had replaced it under warranty!

yea it is definitely not running the same while its in idle. performs around the same though. What could I have done that would have "murdered" the cat? I change the oil every 3k-4k miles...

You are showing a trifecta tune in your sig. If your tune makes you run rich (too much gas), then excess gas is making it thru your exhaust and can cook/break your catalytic converter. A bad 02 sensor may also cause a false reading which could throw off your air/fuel ratio I think.

This.

This is what I was saying before just a little better explained. The most common causes for a bad cat is from fuel or a bad o2 sensor.
