New Camaro: Muscle car or Sports car???
Hello to all. I'm new to the forum, but like everyone else am a lifelong Camaro lover. I'm very much looking forward to the new Camaro hitting the streets. Especially since it will be about the same time I'll be buying a new car. Yay me.
I do have a question though. Is the new Camaro going to be a muscle car in the traditional sense? Or will it be a modern American sports car like the Corvette? The reason I ask is because the new Camaro will be built on an independant rear suspension. IMO, the use of the solid rear axle was the last hold over from the muscle car days. Now we have not only a modern suspension design, but also 400 hp of FI power and a six speed tranny. Plus modern braking, traction/handling control, ergonomics, computer tech, etc. If we looked at these specs in a Toyota/Porsche/Nissan/BMW/etc. it would automatically be considered a sports car. So will the Camaro be considered a "muscle car" just because it traditionaly always has been? Or will it be considered a world class "entry level" sports car? Eric

i think the Camaro is a sports car with a muscle car heart.
Its got the IRS and all kinds of others things, which you mentioned above, which would put it into a "sports car" class... .... but at the end of the day. its still a camaro with a big rumbling V8. |

There's always the question of what is a sports car, and what isn't. Old purists say only convertibles. Others will say two seaters. The last couple generations, by virtue of their styling , i could say were sports cars. The 5th gen, with it's musclecar styling, i just don't know. Plus, it's sizeable weight.

I say both at once. the styling and power of a muscle car, and the handling and sophistication of a sports car.

Independent Rear Suspension. The opposite of SRA (solid rear axle).
I figure it's an American sports car. Muscle car heritage. It has evolved with time. Evokes the emotions of a muscle car, but has all the capability of a sports car.
