McFly,

I can not answer on the ZL1 automatic, but I had a L99 in my 2010 SS so it was auto. My 2013 is a LS3 stick and there is no looking back. Fun factor along with the feeling of more power is just awesome. If you go ZL1 I would go all out and get the stick.

I can only attest that my Auto is VERY fun to drive, VERY...Great A6 they put in the ZL1. But I don't get into the Auto/Man debate. You cant go wrong with either.

Had both. For the zl1 In sport mode on mode 3 I've been very impressed by the auto trans. It will hold the rpm's a bit higher than in standard drive.

In mode 2 it drives very comfortably.

ZL1 and as other have stated I got an extra set of wheels and run other tires half the year. Mine is my DD and I've put aprox. 6K mile on in the first 90 days and they are an incredible balance of all things great in a car you can use every day. I got a 6 speed standard and don't regret it at all and love being engaged in the car and shifting but to each their own.

ZL1 hands down. The ride around town is so smooth and subtle, then you romp on it and all hell breaks loose! I have the manual, great fun and I love it, but if it were a daily driver I would probably get the auto, a lot of praise around here for it and sometimes I just want to cruise with out thinking about shifting, although I am getting old.
As for tires, One of my buddy's with a Z uses Continental all seasons and love them.

Mine is a dd and I love it. I have the auto, although I normally use the paddles (I know, it's not manual, but its cooler than straight auto and houston traffic is horrible sometimes). I have a vert, and I've had issues with water leaking, and it's currently in the shop, but I do enjoy the top down on a regular basis. Be prepared to purchase tires. Not only for winter driving, but just in general they don't last long on a zl1.

With that being said.... Get the ZL1. You won't regret it, and like someone else said, it has a blower and a warranty.

To answer the question what should you pay? I just bought a 13 vert for $9k under sticker. I had two others I would have had to travel to get negotiated to $10k under sticker. Great deals can be had on 13's right now.

Good luck!

The Summer tires are not meant for snow, correct. But, the car win "wet" mode with proper tires is incredibly fantastic in snow. I've driven mine though blizzards across some of the worst highways in North America with no issues.
