Can I replace my 6L50 with a 6L80?
I have a 2012 V6 2LS with the 6L50 transmission. I'm looking to upgrade the internals to get it to shift quicker (i.e. quick shift kit). I have not been able to find any online. However I have seen some info on ones for the 6L80, and I was wondering if it would bolt up in place of my 6L50, and if there were any issues involved with that kind of upgrade

I've been doing some research. I've been told by a mechanic that the 6L80 will bolt up, however the tail shaft is most likely to be different which would require a custom driveshaft.
After looking at the specifications for the 6L50 and 6L80 (spec below, sorry for the crappy formatting). I've been told that the max torque values for the 6L80 are much lower than what would be acceptable in the camaro because those numbers are for safe ranges of much heavier vehicles (see the GVW). I would like to know if those max rpm numbers follow the same rule. 6L50 6L80 Max engine power 315 bhp Max engine torque 332 lb-ft 430 lb-ft Max gearbox torque 480 lb-ft 664 lb-ft Gears First 4.06 4.02 Second 2.37 2.36 Third 1.55 1.53 Fourth 1.16 1.15 Fifth 0.85 0.85 Sixth 0.67 0.67 Reverse -3.2 3.06 Max shift speed 7000 rpm 6500 rpm Max weights GVW 6613 lb 8600 lb GCVW 12505 lb 14000 lb 7-position quadrant P, R, N, D, X,X,X P,R,N,D,S (DSC) converter size 240, 258mm 258 / 300 mm weight 187-198 lb 209 lb |
