Every Dealer I have talked to, (Honda, 2-Toyota, Chevrolet, Subaru, even Pontiac) say people do not want to buy the high milage cars, except when gas was $4. Hybrid sales are way off around my area, people want something special like the Camaro, if the Dealers get them they will sell. The Camaro will have to change in a few years (2014) to get lighter and probably have a turbo 4 cyl., Has anyone driven a VW / audi with 2.0l turbo, great power (I have a VW EOS). For some reason the government wants to raise taxes on gasoline, so we use less, and then when the tax receipts go down, tax more because we are not paying enough tax to them.

I read that article too. I think the author is making an unfair leap because the mention of GM 'discontinuing its five high-performance models' is actually a reference to all the high performance models out there right now (HHR SS, Cobalt SS, Impala SS, Cadillac STS-V, G6 GXP). I think it's more likely that GM will kill the Camaro SS in the future, not the whole Camaro model. Rest easy Camaro fans - given the wait times for our orders, I'd say there's sufficient demand for the vehicle to keep it going for a little while yet.

I think the government would love to get rid of all V8's even if they sell like "hot cakes". Bet on it. I plan on keeping my 2SS for a very long time.

This is sort of irrelevant now anyway, only because they are actually coming to an agreement with the bondholders. That rejection they speak of no longer applies.

I'm not worried.

That reporter's an idiot. They will not discontinue a model unless it is not making money. The demand for this car is huge - there is no way to tell when it will be disontinued, and yes - GM will still be around, just a smaller company.

With 72% stake in GM anything could happen. The problem is the Camaro is making money for GM.

No doubt the comment on the Camaro is just the reporter speculating, but GM will do what it (and the government) think should be done to survive, and it is wishful thinking to say that nothing will happen to the V-8 Camaros. Remember the 70's when muscle cars were detuned and horsepower plummeted. A 1977 Corvette won't get out of its own way and can be had for next to nothing.

But I think that profitability trumps gas mileage in the near term anyhow, so I would be shocked if they discontinued profitable SS Camaros and Corvettes any time soon. GM has lost money on so many of its cars and trucks that I doubt if it will want to scrap the few profitable ones, at least while they stay profitable. Also remember that the fuel economy figures are done with a formula that AVERAGES the mileage of a company's cars, so more hybrids and fuel efficient cars gives room for some less fuel efficient performance cars.

I think that whether the Camaro stays profitable or not is an open question and the diehard fans on this forum are not too objective about whether that is in the cards. Remember that the General already discontinued the car once! But this one has a modern 21st century OHC V-6 and a super 426 horse V-8 for a very affordable price in a car that is better made and better looking than the 02 Camaro, and it should compete strong with Mustang and Challenger by giving more bang for the buck, so I like its chances!

GM likes to brag about all the cars it makes that get 30 miles per gallon but it is still a long way from 39 mpg. It has already announced it is discontinuing its five high-performance models. Expect other high-horsepower models like Camaro to vanish as well.

Anyone for a four-cylinder Corvette?"

What was the 5 discontinued high-performance models it laready announced?

I highly doubt this will every happen.
1. There are many people who hate slow-ass cars
2. There is only so much you can do to a 4 cylinder cars.
3. The high horse power market is set for a % of people and not everyone.

I think what they ment by the V8 Camaro vanishing. is the new emissions plan that the president is hoping to set starting in 2012. where cars have to get 35 and trucks 27 I think.

I'd question the reporter for full disclosure, and ask if he's trying to short-sell GM shares before June 1

He also doesn't understand the new fuel regulations either, so like others I call
